Wild Mushroom & Quinoa Stuffed Pepper

Champagne Toasts

Though daffodils are popping up around the island, we are just on the cusp, with winter one day, and spring the next. This lovely dish is a perfect transition for the two seasons, and can be served as a side dish or vegetarian entrée.

Greetings!

Driving down San Juan Valley Road, the sight of new baby calves and lambs cavorting in the fields just brings a smile to our face. Besides being so cute, we know those animals live in idyllic conditions and receive the utmost care - clean air, fresh grass, lots of room to roam. Many of them get special organic feed developed by their owners to ensure the animals' health and nutrition.

It is this same attention to quality that now guides most of the farmers on the islands, resulting in highly flavorful produce and meat on the dinner table. We spend countless hours each month, buying the small lots and bushels that local growers can bring us - an effort that we feel is well worth the time. There is simply no comparison between a head of lettuce grown two miles down the road, and one shipped in from Mexico.

Farming has never been an easy living, but those who engage in it with "island style" tell us of great contentment at the end of a day's work. Local farmer Jim Lawrence, of Thirsty Goose Farm, says in his book Callused Hands Hungry Heart Champagne Toasts"There is no mystery to the origin of my apples, tomatoes or lamb, no deceptions as to how fresh they are with little comparative demands on our ever fragile planet. I am proud to have found a revolution that I can feel good about, one tomato, one crisp apple, one honorably raised lamb at a time. It's merely a rekindling of what humans have done for thousands of years."

This May, as National Historic Month, we reflect on those hearty souls who have toiled to feed us, and give thanks for their tenacity in caring for the health of our island as well as their crops and livestock.

Fondly,

Anna Maria & Dave

Nettles, ramps, and hedgehogs! Strange sounding, aren't they? Certainly they don't sound like something you'd want to see on your dinner plate. But Chef Bill will change your mind about that when these spring crops come in! (Read more...)

Island Farming - Then and Now

By now, it's no secret: Being in the rainshadow of the Cascades to the east and the Olympics to the south, the San Juan Islands enjoy high sunshine and less rain compared to the mainland. It's great for vacation get-a-ways, but also a boon for farmers.
