Wine Pour

A few picks from our neighbors to the North

Quails Gate, Pinot Noir 2008 Okanagan, B.C. Canada

Aged 11 months in French oak, this powerful yet supple wine drinks like a fine Oregon Pinot.  Flavors of dark stone fruit mingle with exotic spice lead to supple tannins and earthy notes of mature fruit.  Pair with duck breast, mushroom oil or potato soup drizzed with truffle oil and Parmigiano reggiano.  $17

Quails Gate, Chenin Blanc 2009, Okanagan, B.C. Canada

This blend of 94 % Chenin Blanc and 6% Sauvignon Blanc has flavors of citrus and tropical fruit.  It is dry and crisp and would be the perfect complement to oysters or a rich cream sauce.  20% was fermented in French oak barrel maintaining a minerality and freshness.  $13

Greetings!

In our never-ending quest to search out local foods, we came across a family which has been farming for generations on the island.  Kim Sundstrom, who just delivered 100 pounds of his newly milled wheat flour to the restaurant, grew up in the house in which his mother, Ruth Sundstrom, was born.  Her dad is the one who originally bought the house and the property in the early 1900s.  Ruth's sons are now working the 160 acres, Mike raising beef cattle and Kim growing wheat and oats.

Brothers Mike and Kim Sundstrom and Uncle Al Sundstrom

Yielding about one ton per acre, Kim produces 30 tons a year, just enough for the local market.  He uses certified organic practices, fortifying the soil with dehydrated chicken manure to bring the quality of the soil up to his standards.  The variety, called Murill Wheat, is a soft, multi-purpose wheat developed by a gentleman in Whatcom county specifically for the Pacific Northwest growing region.  What's not sold locally is fed to their pigs and sheep.

For milling, Kim takes the grain to Fairhaven Mills in Bellingham, then hauls the flour back to the island.  It seems like a labor of love to us, but Kim's hope is to rejuvenate the land and create a unique product for a unique market.  You can find his flour at the San Juan Island Food Co-op or, of course, baked into our restaurant's breads and pastries.  We are happy to be able to offer yet another true taste of the San Juans!"

Looking forward to seeing you!

Teacher Alphonsine CohosNewSummerHours

Chef Alphonsine has recently been teaching "Enrichment Classes" at Friday Harbor Elementary School.  The program, developed by the school's PTA, functions through the generosity of community volunteers who work with the children outside of the standard school curriculum to provide them an interesting learning opportunity.

These after schoool classes are optional and are an hour in length.  Each topic runs a month and then it's on to something else.  Alphonsine says "It's cool because there are all sorts of activities."  One month the kids might learn how to make a mosaic, plant a garden or identify a Western Bluebird.  In Alphonsine' class, they learned how to make pasta - the same recipe she uses in the restaurant.  They have also made crepes and this week some sort of Eastern Indian soup.  The students love it - especially since they get to eat what they make.  Who wouldn't want to eat Alphonsine's food!

Coho Gets Hard

Shaken? Stirred?  On the rocks? Straight Up? Dirty? A wee bit of "Irish" in your coffee?  Now you can enjoy them all with your dinner.  Our Class H license (which means we can serve hard liquor) FINALLY came through!  Dave just finished his first shopping spree at the state liquor store.  He picked out gin, vodka, single malt aged Scotches, brandy and cordials for your after-dinner sipping and for mixing up simple cocktails.  After just a week, he already has a reputation for a mean Mojito.  Let him know if there's something special you'd like to see on our spirts menu and he'll do his best to get it for you.

Bobi Cespedes

Afro-Cuban Songstress Bobi Cespedes Brings Her Percussion Band and Vibrant "Folkloric" Music to San Juan Community Theatre

Coho Restaurant has paired up with the San Juan Community Theatre once again, this time for a special one-night performance of acclaimed Afro-Cuban folkloric songstress Bobi Cspedes.  A talented songwriter, dancer and percussionist, Bobi is also an accomplished recording artist, storyteller, lecturer and cultural arts teacher.

For over 40 years, Cspedes has been directly involved in the preservation and teaching of the Afro-Cuban culture and traditions. She sings in three languages: English, Spanish and Lucumi, the mother tongue of the descendants of the Yorubas of West Africa in Cuba. She makes and plays a variety of folkloric percussion instruments, including the Chekere, a beautiful beaded calabash gourd. Praised as one of the leading female voices of Afro-Cuban culture today, her vibrant music has been described as "funkloric." Cspedes travels to Friday Harbor with her five-piece band including guitar, bass, drums, percussion, and trumpet/piano.

For a special package price, you can enjoy a 3-course meal including a glass of wine, in Coho's intimate setting.  Chef Alphonsine will cook up a few Cuban-style appetizers and entrees to enhance the theme.  Then stroll a couple of blocks to SJCT for this world music performance.  The package is only $47 per person, tax and gratuity excluded. Curtain time is 7:30pm.  Call (360) 378-6330 to make your dinner reservations, and (360) 378-3210 to order your tickets.  The theater will collect for both the dinner and the show, but you'll want to call Coho first, just to make sure we have tables available.

Our dinner theater packages have become such  popular evening entertainment, we generally reach maximum capacity, and this performer looks to be a bit hit.  We'd hate to have to turn you away - please reserve your table soon.
