San Juan Community Theater + Dinner
For Savor the San Juans, the San Juan Community Theater is combining food and culture by teaming up with Coho Restaurant for dinner/theater and I'll Be Back Before Midnight. This is a tale of a young couple who move into an old farmhouse as the wife is recovering from an emotional breakdown. Peter Colley, who wrote the play as a dark comedy/thriller, says his biggest surprise was how scary audiences found it. It has the potential to make audiences laugh loudly (and then shrink back in their seats in fright). Running weekends through October 16; Click here for more information.

Harrison House Suites & Tucker House Inn Newsletter |
Greetings!
As we move into October, we're gearing up for the third annual "Savor The San Juans - A Medley of Food, Art & Culture." At the restaurant, we celebrate with food, of course, but here at the inns, we focus more on the art aspect of the festival. Recently we updated the photos on our walls, bringing in more local artists to show case their work. Each artist has a unique way of capturing the beauty of the island. One of the artists who's been with us the longest is our long-time islander friend, Kathleen Ballard. After 10 years as staff photographer for the LA Times, Kathleen moved to San Juan Island where she has been creating special images for more than 30 years. Her work has appeared in Sunset Magazine and island galleries, restaurants and bookstores. Kathleen's wildlife and scenic images (available as cards or larger prints) can be found in the Tucker House lobby. Kathleen Ballard | We've dubbed the hallway on the lower floor of the Tucker House "The Whale Wall" because this is where we feature the work of Captain Jim Maya. Jim taught high school history and theater for over 30 years, but he loves nature and was never far from a boat or camera. After moving to the island in 1994, he started his whale watch business so he could continue teaching by taking people out on his boat and sharing this beautiful archipelago, it's amazing geology, history, and wildlife. Jim's "up close and personal" shots of whales are a nice alternative for those who missed the great shot on their whale watch trip.
Jim Maya | The vivid colors of our two newest rooms, the Friday Harbor Suite, and Sunshine Suite, are the perfect showcase for a new artist on the scene, Lisa Barry. Lisa was given a camera when she was 10 years old, and she has not come out from behind it since. She is a biologist, boat captain and scuba diver who has traveled and captured the magic of the wild landscape and animals throughout Africa, China, New Zealand, Puerto Rico, Canada and the U.S. Her work is bold and eye catching. We feature her San Juan Islands scenes, but she has equally arresting images from around the world. With no website up yet, she can be reached at (425) 238-8964 Lisa Barry |
Michael Martin's work adorns the walls of the Lopez and Shaw suites in Harrison House, as well as Amethyst Chain in Tucker House. Mike is another transplanted newspaper veteran who was so thoroughly captivated by the island's beauty, he was inspired to capture it through his camera's eye. His images of the Pelindaba lavender fields and wild foxes particularly compliment the dcor in Amethyst Chain.
Michael Martin | While Mark Gardner's images are not on our walls, they can easily be on yours! Mark continues to offer free portrait sittings for our guests. After a successful career in sales & marketing, and over 15 years as a passionate amateur photographer, he turned to photography full time in 2006. He has a fully equipped studio, but loves to take advantage of the stunning outdoor locations on the island, doing portraits and weddings. He's published a coffee-table book of images of the San Juan Islands, which is available on his website, and at Island Studios, the local artist's co-op. We are excited that Mark is going to take the new Tucker House exterior photo showing off the new paint job! Mark Gardner | All the artwork on our walls is available for sale; simply ask the innkeeper or guest services coordinator about your selection. You can take it with you, we can ship it to you framed, or we can order an unframed print for you. They are a lovely way to capture memories of your San Juan Island stay.
Fondly, Anna Maria & Dave |

San Juan Vineyards Harvest Festival
You may not realize it, but wine makers are like farmers - they're always checking the weather. This time of year in the San Juans is especially problematic for San Juan Vineyards Winemaker Chris Primus. He's watching weather reports like some people watch Facebook, trying to determine how the combination of rain and sun is going affect his precious crop. We know their fabulous Siegerrebe grapes will be harvested in October, he just can't tell us when. Check his website periodically to find the harvest date. If you volunteer to help pick in the fields, you get treated to a fabulous fresh-grilled salmon barbecue dinner and lots of vino in the San Juan Vineyards pavilion, and believe me, you'll have earned it! Sitting on an over-turned bucket, reaching into dense grapevines to cut off those fragrant clusters for a few hours is definitely a case for Ibuprophen!
