Greetings!
Coho
Restaurant is kicking off 2009 with several
exciting events including a Spanish Food and Wine
Dinner, specials to celebrate the Town of
Friday Harbor's 100th Birthday and a romantic
Valentine's Dinner - Italian Style.
In December, we spent two weeks on Grand
Cayman scuba diving and sampling local dishes and
wines. When we travel, we love to meet
locals and talk about 'Island' life.
We were impressed to learn about their Sea Sense
program - an innovative collaboration between the
Department of Environment, Department of Tourism
and Culinary Association. In an effort to save the
health of their reefs, curb over-fishing and eliminate
unnecessary by-catch, they are educating locals and
tourists about the impact of seafood choices on the
Cayman's
environment. Participating restaurants and
supermarkets pledge to purchase local
sustainable fish. This all made sense, no pun
intended, when we were diving a site called Grouper's
Gulch and we saw nary a grouper.
While we do not have a formal Sea-Sense
program on San
Juan Island, Coho chooses fish for our menu that
is not only good for you, but for our environment
including mussels, farmed oysters, Alaskan Wild
Salmon, Pacific Cod, Pacific Halibut, Spot Prawns,
Dungeness Crab and Squid. Here is a list to help you choose
eco-friendly fish for your table. The Sea
Sense project
has
resonance with the
Islands Certified Local Program in which Coho
participates. It encourages restaurants to purchase
local sustainable products from Island farms.
We discovered a few new wines on vacation. We
hope
to have them available at
Coho shortly:
Malbec - Layer Cake 2008, Mendoza,
Argentina -
As the name implies, the wine has three distinct
layers - fruit, mocha and chocolate, followed with hints
of spice. It is a rich full bodied wine with very soft
tannins. $16 retail.
Côtes Du Rhone, E. Guigal, 2003, Rhone,
France - Beautiful, soft, and silky wine overflowing
with berries. 50% Syrah, 30-40% Grenache, and the
rest Mourvedre. $12 retail
Ruggeri Prosecco NV, Valdobbiandene,
Italy - Well crafted sparking wine with crisp
apple notes. $16 retail.
If you would like to share your thoughts or insights
about food or wine, we would love to hear from you.
Savor the San Juan Islands!
Looking forward to having you for dinner,
