Prayer Corner

Palm Vista Baptist church experienced a terrible tragedy just this week when their youth pastor Matt Edahl took his own life. The church, youth group, his wife and 5 kids are devastated. As a church we have pledged to give whatever support we can to Palm Vista. We've started our prayer chain and I will be asking our congregation this Sunday for a special offering that will go to the Edahl family. Pray that God will strengthen the Palm Vista family through this tragedy and keep the enemy from destroying their youth group. Pray that God will surround the Edahl children and Mrs. Edahl with care and comfort. Take a minute and pray right now....

Sometimes we think we've strayed too far to ever find our way back. Other times we wonder why God would want to put up with us at all. But the most dangerous place to be is believing everything is good with our life-walk when it is most definitely isn't. We've got to learn to be on guard against fork in the roadcomplacency but most importantly we need to be encouraged by knowing, deeply knowing, that Jesus doesn't give up on us easily. He stands at the door of our lives, knocking. We need to learn to open the door of our hearts to His call and realize this is not a one-time event. Come on out this Sunday to study a message called, "To the angel at the church of Surprise, write....Part 7, Laodacia." See ya Sunday.

A Word of Encouragement

Genesis 1: 12 (NKJV)
But the more they afflicted them, the more they multiplied and grew....

Our culture is centered on the idea of personal comfort. Even extreme sports and high profile athletes are infected with this virus, for while they may be willing to sacrifice long hours in the gym or in practice the vast majority make these sacrifices for self-centered reasons. "Me first" is endemic to our society. Jesus, on the other hand, calls us to "give up our lives for His sake and the gospels..." The New Testament is filled with examples, encouragements and outright commands to sacrifice our personal comforts and gains for the sake of others, especially when our sacrifice truly costs us and results in zero personal, net gain. There is, however, a spiritual truth in the concept of sacrifice and suffering that many people miss. The history of Israel is an example of this truth as is the rise of the Christian faith in the first few hundred years of church history. When we suffer, when we are under persecution, when we face hard times, we can also experience a cleansing that leads to phenomenal growth. While none of us enjoy difficulties, nor should we expect ourselves to desire suffering, we can learn to trust God through the dark times. He is working. Fantastic growth, which we might never have experienced without difficulties, may be the result of our trials. What we must do is make a choice, a choice to believe God has the story in hand. We can express our trust through prayer and most importantly gratitude, especially when the chips are down. We can do this because we can see how many times in history; great growth and deliverance were the result, in the end, of the tough experiences of the people of God.

Binoculars

Scott McAllister was in Miami using the Super Bowl as an opportunity to witness for Christ. This was all Scott's idea and boy do we love it when people act on great ideas. This kind of short-term evangelism is just the sort of thing we want to encourage and support at FourteenSix. Our goal is to have short-term works on a monthly basis here in town and several times a year in places around the world. It's exciting to see our people come up with their own ideas and trips. Get involved where you can in one of these outreaches.

Recently, some volunteers in the church office were genuinely amazed at the overwhelming amount of tasks required behind the scenes to keep this church functional. I am personally awestruck at how much Melissa and her group of volunteers do to keep up with the records, filing, phone calls, emails and spontaneous counseling sessions that come across our plates every week. It really is a full time job - and boy do we love it. It can get us to a point where our eyes feel permanently crossed but it is such an honor to be able to sweat for our King. Thank you for all your help (and don't be afraid to volunteer more, we assure you we can keep you busy). We are excited to see God drawing so many of you into His work here in Surprise. Whenever you feel overwhelmed, just remember, the enemy's efforts to keep you from growing will only result in greater growth - if you just keep your eyes on Him and carry on.
