Praying At The Cross

Horizon church has been around for a few years making a difference for Christ on the west side of Surprise Farms. Pastor Matt has a real heart for the word and a strong commitment to teaching Biblical truth. Horizon teaches men and women to be disciples of Jesus, just as we do, so we are part of the same family. Pastor Matt asked us to pray for small group leaders to step up, for evangelism urgency in his congregation and for a culture of prayer. Let's pray for Horizon. Take a minute and pray right now....

Message Series

Raising kids is a lot like a box of chocolates - you just never know what you're going to get. You can be the world's greatest parent and raise kids who disappoint you. You can be a rotten parent and have kids who turn out to be upstanding citizens. But either way, ultimately, parents answer to God about what kind of influence their teaching has on the future behavior of their children. We need to understand what God wants us to invest in our kids and our kids need to know how God wants them to react to their parents. It's all part of God's plan to bring His created beings into the best position from which they can choose to follow Him. In addition, there is much to discover about ourselves as we learn to parent and so much for kids to discover about themselves as they learn to be a good kid. Come on out this week as study a message called "On the Edge of Discovery: god's breakthrough wisdom for getting kids back on track." See ya Sunday.

Coming up....
  • January 17 - On the Edge of Adventure: God's breakthrough wisdom for getting kids back on track.
  • January 24 - On the Edge of Connection: God's wisdom for a fantastic marriage.
  • January 31 - On the Edge of Peace: God's revolutionary wisdom for financial peace.
A Word of Encouragement
A Word of Encouragement
Proverbs 16:9 (NKJV)
A man's heart plans his way, But the Lord directs his steps.

There is nothing wrong with making plans. In fact, we are encouraged in other parts of the Bible to make certain we consider our ways carefully, plan with integrity and that wisdom is best served when we take thought about our ways. Still, our overriding attitude needs to recognize that God is ultimately in charge of our lives. Since "God is opposed to the proud, but gives grace to the humble (James 4:6 NASB) we need to remember a vital point: God's plans always trump our plans. If we fail to remember to keep this understanding at the center of our planning, we can fall into pride, thinking that our ingenuity is responsible for our success and direction in life. God may then oppose us and no matter what kind of planning we do we are destined to be humbled. So, the best idea is to regularly submit our plans to the Lord in prayer, asking Him to direct our thinking. As we stay in His presence, He drives us in the direction of His will. Often this is not where we would have gone and sometimes this drive can be toward challenging trails we might have feared to travel - but God's plans are always the right plans. Let us strive to submit our plans to Him, seeking to cooperate with His directing of our steps and we will ultimately experience great victories in life.

Thank Martha Corea for taking on the HUGE task of "visitor follow-up director". Martha will be making telephone calls, sending emails and regular mail letters to all our new visitors. It's a big task and vitally important to our outreach in Surprise. Pray for Martha that the Lord might strengthen her to this task. Her willingness to volunteer in this important ministry is inspiration to all of us. Thanks Martha.

Developing powerful, in-depth, challenging small groups is critical to making disciples. Since our mandate is "Go and make disciples", we are committed to developing small groups that are more than just social gatherings. Beginning January 18th, Monday night at 7 p.m. at Joe Corea's house, our Men's Action group is taking a new step to boost the Men's group into Biblical OVERDRIVE. Our new, weekly study is designed to challenge men for truly deep discipleship. We are committed, for example, to helping each other memorize a chapter title for all 1,189 chapters of the Bible so our men will know the content of the word. Sound like a challenge? Are you up to it? Man enough to get real with the word? Okay - prove it; be there January 18th (see the web for details and a mapJ) Get connected at FourteenSix.

"In his heart, man makes his plans but it is the Lord who directs his steps." I hope in this New Year you join us in striving to be in the presence of the Lord as often as possible so that we can all cooperate with God directing our steps. The more we are in line with Him, the more we will experience the joy of being in the right place, doing the right thing that is pleasing to Him. After all, we're all in this together, none of us gets out of life alive and the only thing that really matters is that we please the Lord with how and what we do with our lives.
