Prayer Corner

Please pray for Dan Marks (my uncle). Uncle Dan is in the hospital with a bowel obstruction and infection. Please pray that his body will mend itself. Pray that God would miraculously heal him. Pray that God will guide the doctors who need to perform a major surgery on him and pray for the Marks family in general as we juggle between faith and fear. Take a minute and pray right now...
This Coming Sunday, November 1, 2009

During his missionary journeys, the Apostle Paul made a habit of going to the local synagogue first and reasoning with the Jews from the scriptures why Jesus was the long awaited Messiah. But Paul approached the non-Jewish people of the region a completely different way. He didn't change the message or water it down he simply packaged it in a way that was understandable to the listener. It is no different today. When Paul spoke to the Jews they understood the authority of the scriptures but when he spoke to non-Jews he used logic and reason as a means of introducing the Bible. We cannot assume the average person in our city has the least understanding of our scriptures so let's learn what it means to use "Salty Speech" as we continue our study of Colossians from Chapter 4 verses 5 and 6. See ya Sunday....

Coming up....

A Word of Encouragement

"Do you not say, 'There are still four months and then comes the harvest'? Behold, I say to you, lift up your eyes and look at the fields, for they are already white for harvest!
" John 4:35 (NKJV)

Jesus went on in this passage to encourage us to pray for workers in the harvest fields because the "harvest is plentiful but the workers are few." In our culture today, it is so easy to get caught up in the unimportant. Whether or not I have the latest and greatest toys in my garage is nothing in comparison to the eternal destinies of my neighbors. I need to pray that I am one of the workers instead of just one of the observers. But what can I do?

Notice it says "workers" not "evangelists" or "pastors". This simple word includes any person who is willing to put in an effort toward the harvest. Maybe the thought of sharing Jesus with someone makes you shake in your shoes - but do you know someone God is gifted with boldness? Maybe you could help them by hosting a Bible study in your home where they could use their skills with the people you invite. You could invite everyone you know to a free potluck at your house and your friend with the gift of boldness (but not the gift of hospitality) could flourish. Or maybe you could organize making and delivering meals to women in your neighborhood who just had a baby. Could you simply invite people you meet to church on a Sunday morning? Did you know that 88% of new conversions to Christ happen because a new convert was personally invited to church by someone they knew? You don't have to be a Pastor to be a "worker" - you just have to be willing.
Thank You

Thank you Loway and Julie Shammas and Scott and Stephanie McAllister for their dedication to leading our youth outreach. Each week this dedicated team puts together focused teaching for our youth, encourages and mentors our teens and provides challenge and vision. We're blessed to have these 4 lead our youth and I'm confident they will continue to do great things for God. Thanks guys.
Vision

Developing a culture of missions is important toward fulfilling the vision of discipleship that God has given us at FourteenSix. We need to get out of our comfort zones and into the harvest fields. For some of us, that may mean sacrificing our cable bill and sending the money to a missionary instead (if you're interested, we have several you can help because even $20 a month helps on the mission field). For others, that will mean joining us on a short-term missions project. Our next missions project is scheduled for November 2010. As the Lord wills, we plan to take a team to Puerto Penasco, Mexico and build a home for a poor family. This is part of our determination to be doers, not just hearers, of God's call.

Signing Off

I've gone on 6 short-term missions projects and each experience has added vital energy into my journey following Jesus. I've made mistakes out there, put my foot in my mouth, been embarrassed. I've been cold (Puerto Penasco can FREEZE when you're in a tent), I've been hungry and I've felt some discomfort - but it was worth it all. When we get out of our comfort zones we really must depend on the Lord and each other to get through the experience in one piece and that can make a huge difference. Come on out with us when we put together an outreach. It'll stretch you but you'll grow in ways you never expected.
