Prayer Corner

Please pray for an outpouring of God's Spirit on our congregation. Pray that God will encourage us all in our hearts and give us new strength. Pray that the Spirit will soften our hearts toward each other so we can make deep and lasting relationships. Pray that God will send His Spirit of joy among us as we make the move to Kingswood Elementary on November 1. Take a minute and pray right now....
This Coming Sunday, October 18, 2009

Dave and Mark Hoffman are brothers who had, at one time, both planted churches. After prayer they decided to join their two congregations and co-pastor Foothills Christian Fellowship. Twenty years later the result is a 2,500 person church that serves about 5,000 children per week, 4 Youth Venture Teen Mentoring Centers and more than 30 on-campus Bible clubs in East County San Diego. In addition, Dave and Mark mentored me and commissioned me to plant FourteenSix Christian Church here in Surprise. This week we are blessed to have Dave Hoffman visiting us from San Diego with a message of encouragement. You'll not want to miss Dave - I encourage you to come out. See ya Sunday....

Coming up....

A Word of Encouragement

" Rejoice in the Lord, O you righteous! For praise from the upright is beautiful. 2 Praise the Lord with the harp; Make melody to Him with an instrument of ten strings. 3 Sing to Him a new song; Play skillfully with a shout of joy..." Psalm 33:1-3 (NKJV)

Have you ever found yourself humming a catchy little tune when you're lost in the wonder of a beautiful day? Have you ever turned on the tunes when you needed to get on with a good cry? Have you ever listened to something so beautiful every goose-bump on your body took notice?

Music is a marvelous gift to us from God. It moves us emotionally, spiritually and physically. When we hear it and sing it or create it, music has the power to change our state of mind. Studies have shown that music can have a healing effect on our emotions and even speed up physical recovery from injury. In fact, studying music has been shown to increase I.Q. scores. What's really interesting is that no one is exactly certain why this is so. The power of music still remains a mystery and the Bible tells us we should use this marvelous gift to worship God.

King David tells us here that such musical praise from those who follow God is a beautiful thing. We ought not to be ashamed to sing loudly with shouts of joy. Notice that David lists out several instruments along with the human voice. It seems clear that using whatever instruments we can find to praise the Lord is a beautiful thing too. Let's worship with gladness, vibrancy and excitement and let the music take us away.

Amazing Grace
"Then King David went in and sat before the LORD; and he said: "Who am I, O LORD God? And what is my house, that You have brought me this far? And yet this was a small thing in Your sight, O God; and You have also spoken of Your servant's house for a great while to come, and have regarded me according to the rank of a man of high degree, O LORD God." - (1 Chronicles 17:16-17, New King James Version)

Amazing Grace is my all time favorite worship song, both for the words and the melody, but mostly for the words. "Amazing" is the best way to describe God's grace. When you fully understand the depth of our sinfulness (depravity) compared to the holiness of God, you have to wonder how He could love us the way He does. It is no small thing to forgive us all the wrong we've done, all the crimes we've committed both small and large, all the selfishness we've shown, all the temper tantrums and childish behavior we've exhibited, all the evil and unwholesome thoughts we've harbored - ALL our sin, not only in the past but in the future as well.

"How sweet the sound"
When we have a real perspective of sin, God's grace is the sweetest thing imaginable. It is nothing for a Christian to call himself a wretch, as the author of this hymn does, because it only means that God's grace is that much sweeter.

See the full text of the song at WorshipVibes.com. You may discover a verse or two you've never seen before.

Thank You

Thank you Shawn Stauffer and Steve Opgenorth for helping put together our new and improved set-up and break-down plan. Shawn worked nearly all day loading and unloading the trailer helping design a plan to off load the trailer in under 30 minutes. Steve is working on building a "nerve center on wheels", a cart that will hold our sound board, computer and other sound equipment that again will cut down our load-in time by as much as 2/3rds. Thanks Shawn and Steve.
Vision

"Faith comes by hearing and hearing by the word of God." Romans 10:17

Our vision is to heavily emphasize the teaching of the Bible. There is a temptation in our culture to emphasize popular topics or spiritual fads. While a topical message series is certainly okay from time to time, our vision is to put a premium on teaching the Bible chapter by chapter and verse by verse so that issues like context and flow of thought are included. We will do the occasional topical message series (we have one planned for January) but our main emphasis will be regular study of the Bible, one chapter at a time.

Signing Off

I've been a musician since Mom and Dad started me out on the piano at age 9. I've played all sorts of instruments in bands, orchestras and other ensembles for a long time but the most satisfying music I've ever played or participated in is worship. There is nothing better than a sweet melody that sings out what I think about who God is and what He has done in my life. But over the years I've learned something about the structure of music too. It has a pulse, a framework and a "shape" in addition to contrasts of loud and soft, dissonance and release. All of these things combine to stir our very souls - if we let it. A stubborn person can sit through Mozart's 40th symphony and refuse to even tap a shoe.

Did you ever think that our lives are a lot like music? We have ups and downs, louds and softs, dissonance and release too. We also can find a pulse to our lives, a structure or a shape - and if we let it, we can see the hand of the composer making sense out of the noise. If we let Him.

"Over and out"...
