Prayer Corner

Please pray for West Coast Christian Fellowship in Encinitas California. WCCF is hosting a community BBQ outreach on Oct 25th and Pastor Barry Young, a close friend of ours and a fellow church-planter, has asked us to pray for this outreach. Pray that God will draw members of the community to hear the message of Jesus. Pray that God will lead people to make WCCF their church home. Take a minute and pray right now....
This Coming Sunday, October 11, 2009

I've noticed over the last few years that customer service is a lost art. So often, employees see themselves as victims of the boss or too inconvenienced to help me find what I'm looking for in their store. As followers of Jesus, it isn't just our duty to be good employees and good bosses, it is our gift to God. As followers of Jesus we ought to be the employee everyone wants on the shift. We need to be employers of such high regard that people are lined up to work for us. Sadly, this is a lost skill but Colossians 3:22-4:1 gives us the map toward this lofty goal. Come on out this weekend to learn more from a message called "Employee of the Month". See ya Sunday....

Coming up....

A Word of Encouragement

"Now all these things happened to them as examples, and they were written for our admonition, upon whom the ends of the ages have come." 1 Corinthians 10:11 (NKJV)

This scripture ties up a longer section referring back to the stories of the Old Testament. The writer wants us to know that every word in the Bible has value for us. In fact, this tells us that we who believe in Jesus are the ones "upon whom the ends of the ages have come." We were the target of these stories, the reason they were written and we need to value them - both the Old and New Testaments.

Henry Morris points out that the word "examples" here, in Greek, is tupos from which we get our English word "type". The Old Testament characters and stories are "types" from which we can draw meaning. For example, Job is a "type" of person who understood what it meant to stay true to God no matter what the circumstances and no matter how much you don't understand why things turn out as they do in life. Job is an example to us, a figure meant to encourage us, give us instruction and hope.

Finally, take a look at the word "admonition" which is nouthesia in Greek. It means "to put in mind" or "to train by word". God has not left us to fend for ourselves in life. He led more than 40 authors over a period of 1,500 years to give us exactly the "types" He wants to use to "train us by word." He saw to it that after thousands of years, His training is there to help us make sense out of life. How tragic that so many people never prioritize reading His Bible, let alone studying and memorizing it. Make it your thought today to get into the Word.

What Did I Do Wrong?!
Psalm 44:17-19
"All this happened to us, though we had not forgotten you or been false to your covenant. Our hearts had not turned back; our feet had not strayed from your path. But you crushed us and made us a haunt for jackals and covered us over with deep darkness."

Not all of our suffering is the result of something we did wrong. (Yes, probably more often than not it is, but not always.) The psalmist here reminds us that God's ways don't always make sense to us. He knew that Isarael had remained faithful to God and yet God chose to allow them to suffer defeat in battle anyway. God is not obligated to reward our faithfulness and devotion, though He often does. Sometimes - as Job could no doubt attest - God allows suffering and pain in our life that He may be glorified through it.

This psalm has an encouraging ending:  "Rise up and help us; redeem us because of your unfailing love" (vs. 26). We need not wallow in our self pity. We can beseech our Lord to deliver us and glorify Himself through His own faithfulness.

This psalm is an important key in Paul's thesis in Romans 8. Read more about it at www.worshipvibes.com.

Thank You

Thank you Tatum Church of Christ for donating to us all of the Amor missions trip supplies. These costly supplies, including everything from hammers to 100 gallon drinking water tanks, are essential for our trips to build houses for the poor in Mexico. We skipped our trip to Mexico this year due to the political situation in Mexico but hope to organize and send a trip in November 2010. Now we've got all the tools we'll need. Thanks Tatum.
Operation New Neighbor

Thank you so much to Tim & Nichole Juillet for all of your hard work to keep this ministry active and moving forward. We have been so excited to see the new faces come to church for receiving one of these great invitations to FourteenSix.

If you are not involved and would like to get plugged in somewhere, please don't hesitate to contact Tim Juillet. Or, if you have any extra envelopes hanging around your house that you are not using, please consider donating them to this ministry. Thank you to all of you for your continued support with our Operation New Neighbor ministry.

If you would like to help, please contact me at: Tim@fourteensix.com.

Operation Mailer
Stacks of cash
Our January Mailer is scheduled to be the largest outreach effort in our church history. We're raising funds now through our "change challenge" and we hope you will be part of our efforts. This will help us send invitations to visit our church to 30,000 homes.

Vision

We believe in gathering followers of Jesus together in order to encourage each other, provide training in Godliness and create opportunities for us working together. We want to make a difference in our community by teaching and walking out the principles of Jesus. This is the definition of what church ought to be so we've created the Christianity 101 class, and others like it, to help build our children and adults into well educated followers of Jesus. It's not about the "breakfast and a movie Sunday morning show", it's about really following Jesus from our hearts. This is the driving force behind all we do at FourteenSix.

Signing Off

I'm a really busy person. I go to the gym at 5:30 in the morning, help get the family out the door and finally get to the office around 8:30ish. I've got to leave by 10:30 to get to Shadow Ridge High School for my first class at 11:05. I don't leave there till 2:30 on a good day, take a few hours at the office, then I'm either off to a Bible study or a meeting or home to help with the family while my wife is at a Bible study or a meeting. Saturday's are catch up days and Sundays are full from early morning till late afternoon. It's a roller coaster ride most weeks (and I like roller coasters, they're a kick) and I imagine most of you have a similar story. But even with all of this I've found that making time to read and study the Bible (outside of what I need to do to get a message done) is soothing to my soul. God's word, the Bible, is like honey on my tongue. Even if you're busier than I am, make the time to be in His word - you will be refreshed, renewed and able to get on your roller coaster with excitement instead of dread.

"Over and out"...
