Prayer Corner

Please pray for the FourteenSix Youth Group. Our new leadership team is dedicated to encouraging our youth to take the next step in their spiritual maturity and provide outreach opportunities for our kids. It's a challenging task, prepping the lessons, mentoring the kids and staying interesting in a culture where kids are bombarded by 10,000 temptations every day. Pray that God will give wisdom to our leadership team (Loway, Julie and Scott). Pray that God will inspire our kids to get active in the group. Pray that God will attract more kids to hear His message of real life. Take a minute and pray right now....
This Coming Sunday, August 16, 2009

The mark of being a true follower of Jesus is real love. Jesus said "by this will all men know that you are my disciples when you love one another". But have you ever experienced someone coming down on you because you don't wear a shirt and tie to Sunday service? Or maybe you go to church on the wrong day of the week? Or worse, you celebrate Easter and Christmas which we all know are pagan holidays in Christian clothes! Hmm, I don't know about YOU...but this kind of thinking misses the point of Jesus coming in the first place. On the other hand, there are some folks who continue to live no different from unbelievers while still professing to be Christians. Where do you draw the line? The Holy Spirit, speaking through the apostle Paul, wants us to be free in Jesus but know the difference. In Colossians 2: 16 - 23 we're going to understand some more about this issue with a study called "Relationship vs. Regulations". See ya Sunday....

A Word of Encouragement

1 John 3: 18 - 20 (The Message)

My dear children, let's not just talk about love; let's practice real love. 19 This is the only way we'll know we're living truly, living in God's reality. It's also the way to shut down debilitating self-criticism, even when there is something to it. For God is greater than our worried hearts and knows more about us than we do ourselves.

The only real power the Devil has over us is lies and fear. Often we listen to his lies about how pathetic we are, how we've done this or that or, worse, how we just don't measure up to what someone else is doing in their family or their church. We join into this lie with self-criticism and the temptation to quit even trying to live a life pleasing to God becomes overwhelming. But notice how "practicing real love" results in two things: assurance that we really do belong to God and this practice defeats our tendency, magnified by our self-criticism, toward apathy. When I feel like maybe God is just "done" with me and when I feel reminded of my many, many faults I need to remind myself (and the Devil) that the Bible says "I can do ALL things through Christ who strengthens me". And then, to further defeat this depressing, heavy feeling I need to get busy in the service of other folks. The love spoken of in this verse is a practical, hands-on effort toward seeking the highest and best interest of others, even at our own expense. When you volunteer in the children's ministry, take food to a sick person, take time out to pray with a hurting friend or get involved as an usher, with a sincere heart that is not self-seeking (that's REAL love), then God WILL begin to speak assurance into your heart.

God Is Looking For You!
I have heard many people say they are trying to find God or waiting for Him to show up in their lives. There are certainly times when we feel like God is far from us, usually when we are struggling with something and we feel like God doesn't hear us. Even King David felt this way at times. In Psalm 10:1 he wrote, "Why, O LORD, do you stand far off? Why do you hide yourself in times of trouble?"

But is God really far off? Is He really hiding from us? Consider this verse: "Yet a time is coming and has now come when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for they are the kind of worshipers the Father seeks (emphasis mine)" (John 4:23). Jesus told the Samaritan woman that if you are a true worshiper of the Father - if you worship in spirit and truth - then He is actually seeking you!

The next time you feel that God is far off and hiding from you, then maybe it's time to stop looking for Him and start worshiping Him. Then He will come and find you!

Vision

Servant Evangelism

Practical outreach is so needed in our community. There are so many advertisements, sales calls and commercials in the air it can be difficult to breath. So how can we speak to a jaded culture with the message of the free gift of Jesus? By offering a free gift. Our small groups are committed to developing, planning and executing a "servant evangelism" outreach at least once per quarter, per group - this will eventually translate into at least one event per month. We use free car washes, giveaways at parks, free concerts, free gift wrapping during the Christmas season and other such events to create conversation opportunities where we can share the good news of Jesus. It's exciting, it happening and you can be part of it - get involved in your small group today.

Signing Off

Our E-letter is getting to be an "E-blog" or maybe an "E-book". But it's all good, all designed to encourage you every week and keep you informed about what God is doing at FourteenSix. I hope you read this every week and I hope it blesses you. Keep praying that God will empower you in your inner person to live a life that pleases Him. Keep praying that God will open your eyes to opportunities to really love those around you - in doing so you will find, as I have, a deep assurance in God and a renewed desire to be about the business of His kingdom.

"Over and out"....

Sincerely,
Pastor Pat
