Warrior Mind
Female Yoga at Sunset

Inspiring video.  Watch here (2:33)
-- 81-year-old marathon runner Joy Johnson trains, competes and lives with strength of body and mind.  She's an inspiration about what is possible at any age.

"Do what you can, with what you have, where you are."
-- Teddy Roosevelt, 26th President of the United States

"One of the biggest things separating runners who can come to enjoy pain and suffering from those who don't is that they've been opened up to the possibility that pain can be a source of pleasure..."
-- Michael Atkinson, Ph.D., runner and sports sociologist

Exercise Science

Facts and research about training and how exercise helps keep you healthy in body and mind.

ANANDAMIDE WARRIOR?
Did you know that one of the body's natural brain chemicals that contributes to the "runner's high" is anandamide, the body's own marijuana?  Discovered in 1992 and named from the Sanskrit word for "bliss," anandamide produces an effect similar to a marijuana high.  Like endorphins, anandamide is released into the body during vigorous exercise.

AFFECT OF MENTAL FATIGUE ON EXERCISE PERFORMANCE
A study in the March 2009 issue of Journal of Applied Physiology investigated the relationship between mental fatigue and physical performance.  The researchers found that the study subjects ceased exercising about 15% earlier when they were mentally fatigued.  Athletes and exercisers engaging in high-intensity exercise should do so when mentally rested, the researchers concluded.

STUDY: RUNNERS LIVE LONGER

According to an on-going Stanford University study that began in 1984, comparing 538 people age 50 or older who run regularly, with a control group of 423 people age 50 or older who never run (drawn from the faculty and staff at Stanford), the people who exercised lived significantly longer.  By year 19 of the study, 15% of the runners had died, compared with 34% of the non-running control group.

Miraculously Connected

"As I run, As I run, The universe is running with me."

-- adapted from the Navajo Indian rain dance ceremony

Trail running is my IT workout.  I love the animal-like action of moving along the trail, expressing my running nature.  Feet in the dirt, magnificent sky overhead, immersed in the outdoors...here I experience a way of being that is vastly different from most of my usual day in the man-made world.

No matter if my trail run is a sufferfest full of hills or intervals, or relaxing and meditative, trail running for me is always about running for its own sake.  There is no goal to my running.  I simply run for the enjoyment of running itself.  It is pure play, an expression of my nature...that "something" within me that wants to move and exert and sweat.

On the trail, I leave behind seriousness and ego and email and the constant chatter of suburban living and, instead, become a "good animal," as George Sheehan would put it.  I run with my senses, fully present, tuning in to my inner world and absorbing the natural world around me.  This experience always leaves me feeling cleansed and whole and satisfied.

And now here's the best part.  Sometimes, I'll plan to finish my run in the middle of the canyon below my neighborhood, just so I can remain immersed in nature and bask in the afterglow of a good run.  Calm, energized, clear headed - it is one of those rare times when I allow myself to "just be"...and there are barely words to describe how good this feels.  With no exaggeration whatsoever, it feels like the moments in the movie Phenomenon, when John Travolta and the trees are connected and moving to the same pulse.  Opened up and sensitized by running and nature, I feel miraculously connected to everything around me.

I'll admit that during these moments I may be a little bit "high" from all of the natural, feel-good chemicals I've dumped into my brain while running, but these moments have less to do with my brain and more to do with my heart and soul and "all" of me.  With my trail-running-induced, heightened awareness, I strengthen my connection to the Infinite Energy, or Force, or God that is all around me and also within me.  And the more I am in alignment with this Force, or God, the better my entire life becomes.  Trail running helps keep me there.  How fortunate those of us are who are healthy enough to put our bodies in motion, exert ourselves and experience the joy and benefits of exercise.
