"My body had long since exhausted all its energy, but it went on running just the same.  The physical overdraft came only from greater willpower."

-- Roger Bannister, first man in history to run the mile in under four minutes, describing how he felt during the final 50 yards of his record-breaking run in 1954.

"In the breath, the soul finds an opportunity to speak."
-- Danna Faulds, yoga practitioner and teacher, poet and author

"Happiness is an attitude.  We either make ourselves miserable...or happy and strong."
-- Anonymous

You Are A MiracleFemale Yoga at Sunset

-- Your heart will beat about three billion times over your life without a break.  Not one minute of rest or recovery.

-- Every second, 100,000 chemical reactions take place in every cell of your body.  Now, multiply 100,000 chemical reactions by the 70 to 100 trillion cells that make up your body.  That mind-boggling number is the number of chemical reactions that take place inside of you every second.

-- The DNA in the nucleus of one human cell is a thread that measures two yards by ten atoms...a billion times longer than it is wide.  Two yards of this DNA packs into each cell by coiling itself endlessly on itself.  If there are 70 trillion cells in your body, unwound, that string could stretch to the sun and back 400 times.

INTERVAL TRAINING VS. ENDURANCE TRAINING

According to a 2005 study conducted at McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario, a total of two to three minutes of sprinting, done in 30-second bursts during a 20-minute workout three times per week, produced the same results as three endurance cycling sessions per week, each of which lasted 90 to 120 minutes.  The aggregate training time commitment including recovery was 2.5 hours in the sprint group, whereas the endurance group performed 10.5 hours of total exercise over two weeks.  In spite of the significant difference in training volume, both groups showed similar improvement in exercise performance and muscle parameters linked with fatigue resistance.  "The most striking finding from our study," said lead researcher Martin Gibala, Ph.D., "was the remarkably similar adaptations induced by two such diverse training strategies."

EXERCISE REGENERATES BRAIN CELLS

Very recent studies have shown that exercise boosts the brain's rate of neurogenesis - the rate at which the brain regenerates brain cells.  Study subjects in a 12-week Columbia University study who exercised for one hour four times a week predictably became more fit.  Their VO2 max rose significantly.  In addition, blood flowed at a much higher volume to a part of the brain responsible for neurogenesis.  Functional M.R.I.'s showed that a portion of each person's hippocampus received almost twice the blood volume as it did before.  Scientists suspect that the blood pumping into that part of the brain was helping to produce new neurons.

Exercise Is A Source Of Joy

"What is happiness?  The feeling that power is growing, that resistance is overcome"
-- Freidrich Nietzsche

The beast is ahead.  The small hill that's so steep, with so many ruts in just the wrong spots that I've never been able to ride up it on my mountain bike without losing my balance or momentum and having to bail off my bike and walk up to the top.  Once I've stopped, the hill has been too steep for me to get enough momentum going to get my second foot on the peddle and keep my bike going up the hill.

So today, as I approach my nemesis yet again, I line myself up at the bottom, get in what I think is the right gear, and focus.  I make sure to keep my weight back over my back tire to keep my traction and power as the hill gets steeper and with a couple of solid peddle strokes maneuver through the steepest part.  "I can do it...I can do it...I can do it," I repeat to myself as I peddle forcefully and balance my way to the top.  And I do.  I ride to the top for the first time.

My family has a dinner-time tradition where on most nights, we go around the table and each family member tells their "best part" of the day and their "worst part" of the day.  Almost as soon as I crest the hill the thought comes to my mind, "I can't wait to share my 'best part' of the day."

I continue the rest of my ride, basking in the glow of my achievement.  I had to chuckle at myself a little too.  Gosh, here I am 52 years old and I'm thrilled about riding my mountain bike up a hill!  Shouldn't I have grown beyond this by now?  Perhaps so.  Or maybe I'm just experiencing happiness as explained by Nietzsche in the quote above.  I've overcome the resistance of "the beast" and feel the power growing inside of me...and for now, this is good.

Exercise and living with strength is a source of joy.  How fortunate those of us are who can experience this today.  Warrior On!
