'Flying with Anaphylaxis'... your feedback!

*Last year I took my son (Chay 6) to Queensland flying Virgin Blue and they were amazing; my son has severe peanut allergy and is touch sensitive.  They made an announcment that no peanuts would be sold on the flight at all and I know a couple of people complained, but they would not sell them peanuts.  It was great, so now I will always travel Virgin with my son.

*My 3 year old son has egg, peanut, tree nut, and fish allergy. Last time we travelled on a domestic budget airline they did continue to serve nuts and other foods containing nuts, such as cookies on the flight. Because it was a budget flight and the aircraft seemed to have a fast turn around between passengers leaving the aircraft and when we boarded, there was a lack of cleaning; there were nuts on the floor and little nut fragments on the seat.
For me this is a major stress with trying to keep my son safe.
We do have epi-pens, but that is not really the solution I feel, when you're in the air there are very limited methods of response in an emergency. This was our first flying experience together and I now have some reservation about flying again.

*I fly internationally regularly. I complain each time when they serve nuts in first class.  I have written to Qantas to complain about them having nuts on board the plane.  At one stage they were going to "phase them out", but now they don't even say they will do that.
I think it needs a concerted campaign to get them to stop serving nuts.

*I was horrified to read the story on airlines who still serve allergenic foods.   I am an allergy specialist nurse, and have worked in the field of allergy for many years.  You would assume that given the high incidence of food allergies that they would have considered this, especially as there is an extremely high prevalence of accidental exposure, even in those who are extremely cautious. Exposure can occur through accidental ingestion of shared food, foods not known to contain peanuts or peanut by-products such as peanut oil, cross contamination of eating utensils, table surfaces and food preparation. A single bite of the wrong food can induce anaphylaxis, a life-threatening reaction in severely allergic people. Reactions to food are the leading cause of anaphylactic attacks seen in emergency rooms. Hopefully they are prepared to treat anaphylactic reactions, as death may occur in minutes of exposure.

NEW RESEARCH...
Researchers from the Children's Hospital Boston found that at least one in eight children suffering anaphylactic shock from a reaction to a food allergen required a second dose of epinephrine to fully recover. According to their report in the journal Pediatrics, food allergies affect at least 6% of children, and symptoms of a severe reaction may include swelling, difficulty breathing, nausea, vomiting, itching, and/or skin rash.  "An injection of epinephrine is often enough to reverse the condition, but sometimes two shots may be necessary," Dr. Susan A. Rudders said.
