Gospel Events Come True In Downtown Louisville   Cathedral Louisville

Have you ever had an experience where you felt like a gospel event was coming true before your very eyes?  Some days I feel so privileged to witness the things I do, and I don't think I should be the only one privy to the small but powerful acts that occur around the Cathedral.  I just answered a knock on my door to find a woman who eats regularly in our daily lunch program, which serves a free meal to over 130 of Louisville's homeless and hungry each day.  She smiled, reached out her arm, and deposited a $100 bill into my hand.
"For the lunch room," she said.
"I can't accept this!" I quickly responded back.  "It's too much -- don't you need it?"
"Please take it," she responded.  "You have no idea what this place means to me.  It has been here for me when I needed it most.  I want to be able to give back.  Please, just take it."
And there I was, floored by her generosity.  In the back of my head ran the Gospel of Mark about the widow's mites: "they gave out of their abundance, but she, out of her poverty, gave all that she had to live on..."   Incredible.
Acts like this happen more often than not around here -- not always with $100 bills, but I am often amazed and touched by offerings to the lunch program from our guests.  I think, today, I was floored by something else too.   I spend five days a week in the lunch room, and it has become routine to me.  Sometimes I forget the strength and humility it takes to enter that door, and the many hungers that are fed in our little dining room.  Physical hungers for sure, but more than just stomachs are filled in this place.  And so I give thanks -- to those who make the lunch room possible, and to those who enter its doors each day to feed and to be fed.
