The Oeno Gallery, working in collaboration with theJohn M. Parrott Art Gallery, is pleased to present a 50 year retrospective of Graham Meton's work, in combination with several of his latest works,at the John M. Parrott Art Gallery in Belleville. In 2009, Metson was also honoured by a 50 year retrospective at the Gibberd Gallery in Harlow, England where he had his first exhibition in 1959.
Prolific and provocative, Graham Metson is internationally recognized as a master of colour and motion, joyousness and intellect.
Metson's works on canvas and paper have been described as "operatic" and "bursting with life and movement", where "forms move around like whirligigs". Observes critic John Grande in his essay, Fulcrum: "There is an uncanny sense that signs and symbols are extracted and re-placed in these painterly situations, a metaphor if you will for an era that manufactures its contexts, only to then deconstruct and recompose them endlessly." Metson's distinctive photomontages explore applications of technology, mass media, and the information highway. "Metson has always had a finger firmly on the deep pulse of our times," comments curator James D. Campbell in his essay, Speculative Fictions: the Photomontages of Graham Metson, 1955-1995. Graham Metson has been represented by prestigious galleries throughout Europe, the United States and Canada for five decades. He has been the visiting artist to over 28 American universities and has taught at five universities in Canada and the United States. His work has been written about by many critics, and is part of several public collections. He now lives and works in Prince Edward County and is represented by the Oeno Gallery.
