Threshold: The Works of Ingeborg Mohr, RCA (1921 - 2004)
September 16 - October 14 Opening Reception Saturday, September 19, 3 - 7pm
How do we hold the world around us, encompass it and let it be? This is the question Ingeborg Mohr posed in her artist statement for her exhibition at the Pollock Gallery in Toronto, 1979; and it is the central question addressed in the many paintings she produced between her first exhibition in 1955, and her last, in 2001.
Mohr is described as one of Canada's greatest artists by author Maria Tippett, scholar and art historian.
Those who give Ingeborg Mohr's work the time and place they deserve are deeply rewarded with glimpses of her determined optimism, hard won moments of relief - and even joy - that emerged from her solitary times.
"My goal," Mohr once said, "is to find the goodness of the human condition." In 1974, in an interview with The Globe and Mail, Mohr reflected on the mystical, religious interpretation often given to her work. "It's really an exploration of the unknown, and a process that incredibly connects me with my roots. Without connection, I cannot paint. I never paint when I am troubled...Humility grows where experience overwhelms - and a strangely deep trust of life develops." Mohr's work is held in many private , public and corporate collections in Europe, the U.S. and Canada.
The Oeno Gallery is pleased to be the exclusive agent for the paintings of Ingeborg Mohr. In this exhibition, twelve of the works from Mohr's personal collection are offered for sale for the first time: eight selected works on paper from different periods, plus four canvases.
Proceeds from the sale of her work will go to the Hans and Ingeborg Mohr Arts Fund to support the creation of a retreat on Howe Island (near Kingston) where painters, writers, dancers and musicians can develop their own work. |

Alice Teichert's Visual Poetry Exhibit Continues until September 14 Alice Teichert is no ordinary painter. She is an artist who creates a space where painting + language + music = visual poetry. Her current exhibit at Oeno Gallery features ten text'paintings on canvas plus the 32-panel score from s'pos )in(, the new text'painting /jazz composition that premiered at the Gallery on August 18 to a sold out audience.
Teichert's paintings - intuitive, complex and sensual - speak in a lyrical vocabulary of graphic notations fused with high colour and translucent glazing. Distinguished art critic, Ken Carpenter, praises her work as "a fluid language that moves our souls" where "abstraction, especially, is a spiritual experience, always alive and full of endless promise, with destinations yet unknown." Teichert will be speaking about her work at the Gallery on Sunday, September 12 at 5pm. Please join us. |

A light dinner will be served at Huffs Estates Inn and Winery from 6:00 - 7:30 pm and a Jam Session will be held on the Huff Estates patio at 9:30 pm. Reservations are required. Please call the Gallery at 613-393-2216 to book your seats.
Here are several responses the Gallery has received from audience members who were lucky enough to attend the premiere of s'pos )in(.
"Every once in a while, there is a happening in the art world that catapults us into a heightened state and keeps us 'wired' all through the night. The world premiere performance of s'pos )in( at the Oeno Gallery in Bloomfield, Ontario on August 18th was such an evening." Nan Williamson "This performance was simply outstanding. It is a unique fusion of sound and graphics and breaks the boundaries of conventional art and performance. Not to be missed." Anne Potter
"An enthralling performance, a revelry in a sea of language, must be like scuba diving on the great barrier reef. It was like Jazz without a key, even though in fact it belongs to the classical tradition -- writing becomes sound. So I listened, concentrating very hard and then, occasionally a word phrase would suddenly flash up (between keyword and motif) and I would hitch a ride on it, let it carry me. Had I been prepared I might have numbered the parts, written a few word-name phrases down, a few for each part. I will do that next time. It would be my journal. Hope to come again on September 11, better prepared. Such a rich and dynamic text invites lots of scribbling -- a carnival for aesthetic modernists! Apollinaire was in the audience last night -- where else better for him on a starry night in a winery in Prince Edward County vers le Canada." Jonathan Bordo "I want to tell you again how wonderful the event was last night. It was truly a magical evening." Brian Barlow
"My initial experience was that this was interesting but contrived. However this was quickly dispelled as I became thoroughly absorbed in the mastery, magic and emotion of expanding and integrating the forms of the word through the multiple genres of expression. I look forward with great interest to the evolution of this work. Thanks for your foresight and courage in promoting it." Brian Beiles |

Labyrinths: Clay & Paper
New work by Susan Collett October 16-November 10
Susan Collett's new, large-scale clay sculptures, from her Labyrinth series, aim to express an articulation of chaos, through form and control of light. Collett`s core interest lies in the exploration of strength vs. fragility. Two artist residencies in China have been integral in solidifying these ideas.
Collett's unique print works echo the themes of her ceramic works. They are executed from plates made from stitched industrial-grade copper sheeting. All images are single monoprints, not edition printed.
Collett has received numerous awards for her work and recently received the honour of being inducted into the Royal Canadian Academy of the Arts.
