Scrimshaw Demonstrations
scrimshaw knifeAmerican Folk Art
Gary Kiracofe, resident scrimshander, demonstrates the American folk art of scrimshaw right here in Ephraim. Scrimshaw is the term used for detailed carving or engraving of pictures into bone or ivory. During long voyages whalers spent their free time carving pictures into bones. Gary has over 30 years of hand-engraving experience and displays his art, along with that of several other scrimshanders, at the Scrimshanders Gallery in Ephraim. Watch Gary work on Friday afternoons from 2-5pm; an amazing art.
