Midwest Feed

Recent news that a long time retail service operation plans to close at the end of April should be a cause for all of us as community stakeholders to reflect on just what type of retail and service future we want for Hutchinson. Do we want to pass on a vibrant and historic "Heart of Our Community" or settle for a drive to another city for our needs?  Take time to read the Hutchinson News editorial:

http://www.hutchnews.com/Editorialblogs/midwest-edit

and then vote with your shopping and service dollars.  I am sure the folks at Midwest Feed would welcome a visit, just click on the "Shop" button on this website and look for Midwest Feed under "Downtown Speciality Retailers" for their location.

Springtime in Downtown Hutchinson!

As you will see in this newsletter, there are a lot of fun activities and events ahead of us this Spring.

In April, the excursion train will visit Downtown Hutchinson and will offer an old fashioned train ride.

Third Thursday is full of community events, musicians, artists and the return of Downtown's popular"Taste It Event" with tickets on sale this Friday, April 1st at Alexander's Jewelry and Apron Strings.

The Main Street Hops for TECH tickets are also on sale by calling the TECH office at (620) 663-1596 or ordering online at www.techinc.org.

Saturday, May 7th Downtown will host the annual Outdoor Art Fair at a new location.  The Art Fair will present local and regional artists at Memorial Hall and the new George Pyle Park from 9 a.m. till 4 p.m.  The Cinco de Mayo Celebration will also take place on May 7th with great family fun in Avenue A Park and on Main Street between Avenue A & B.  Several new activities, including the Cow Creek Duck Regatta, will highlight this year's Cinco de Mayo Celebration.

Saturday, June 4th will be the next Antique Appraisal Fair at Memorial Hall.  We expect tremendous growth of this event after the great success of our first event and the many out of town participants we had.  We are still working on final details and will have more to report very soon!  We are working on a coupon book that we can give to visitors throughout the summer so stayed tuned on how you can get your business involved.

A lot of dedicated people are working hard to make Downtown a better place.   If you are interested in helping or need more information about Downtown Hutchinson activities, events or volunteer opportunities, please call our office at 694-2677 or e-mail jims@hutchgov.com.

DESIGN COMMITTEE NEWS - Chair Lovella Kelley

The Committee has been working with Hutchinson Recreation Commission's Superintendent of Aquatics and Wellness Ted Nelson on designating a "safe mile" walk beginning in Avenue A Park.  The path would be approximately 1/4 mile long and would not cross Main or other streets.  Signage will be provided along the way to notify users of the distance traveled.  We will keep you posted on when the "safe mile" path is marked and ready for walkers.

The Committee is working on the Annual Art Walk and will continue working on public art ideas in the Downtown area in 2011.  If you have any ideas, we'd like to hear from you!

ECONOMIC RESTRUCTURING COMMITTEE NEWS - Chair Victoria Crow

The Committee has been in discussions with business owners on Main Street between 3rd and 4th Avenues to talk about improvements in what has come to be known as the "Santa Fe District."

We hope you have had a chance to drive by or shop around 3rd and Main and have seen what what a change some paint has made to the building on the corner!
