CHILI/SOUP FESTIVAL
September 25th
Sign Your Team Up Now!
2009 Chili/Soup Festival Booth
2009 Chili/Soup Festival Booth

Now's the time to sign up your Chili/Soup Festival Team and decide which recipe will win the contest.  We invite you to come out and support the Promotion Committee's 2010 Chili/Soup Festival on September 25th!

If you have a winning recipe, enter a Chili/Soup Team from your business or group.  The cost for ingredients and supplies is around $200, however, Downtown Hutchinson is partially subsidizing teams and will have merchant discount coupons for some of the ingredients.

If you don't want to enter the contest, you can still support a team by allowing them to set up in front of your business.  Tag your radio spots for your business a week or two ahead of the event (example: "Come Downtown Saturday, September 25th for the Annual Chili/Soup Festival").  Ask your Hutchinson News sales rep to include the Chili/Soup graphic and information in your ads in September.

Pre-sell the $3 wristbands from your store and use them to promote special prices or discounts at your business the week of or day of the event.  This can be a great marketing tool and will help Downtown cover the costs of the event.

Announcing the
Kansas Main Street Symposium and 25th Anniversary
Kansas Main Street 25th Anniversary

2010 Kansas Downtown Symposium
Hutchinson Selected as Site
in 2010

Hutchinson has the privilege of hosting the 2010 Kansas Downtown Symposium October 20th through 22nd, and we are excited about this great opportunity to welcome representatives from Kansas cities who are members of the Kansas Main Street Program to our beautiful Downtown and City.

In 2010, Kansas Main Street is celebrating 25 years as an organization and Downtown Hutchinson, as one of the first cities to join Kansas Main Street, will also celebrate 25 years of membership.  We are looking forward to hosting the 2010 Kansas Downtown Symposium and the opportunity to celebrate these 25 year milestones.  We hope all the Kansas Main Street cities will make plans now to attend the 2010 Kansas Downtown Symposium in Hutchinson October 20th through October 22nd.

Downtown Hutchinson has a formal agreement with the National Main Street Center of the National Trust for Historic Preservation and the Kansas Main Street Program of the Kansas Department of Commerce to assist in the revitalization of the downtown area.  Hutchinson is one of the original Kansas Main Street Cities, becoming a Kansas Main Street City in 1986 and is one of 25 cities in Kansas that are designated as Kansas Main Street Cities.

For more information about this program, visit the Kansas Main Street website and check out frequently asked questions about the Kansas Main Street Program.  This program is supported in part through an agreement with the Kansas Main Street Program, Kansas Department of Commerce.

From Director Jim Seitnater

At a recent training that I attended in Oklahoma City, the speaker told of the importance of a first impression, which we all know is crucial and happens only once.  But it was his next comment that really stuck with me.  He said that we all are creatures of habit and tend to have the same routine each day; we drive the same route to work, stop at the same place for gas or coffee and probably enter work the same way each day.  His point is we probably don't see what our customers see as they first enter our stores and businesses.

We also learned from John Schallert the importance of store layout, merchandising our strongest sellers in the most traveled areas of our stores and how we flow people through our stores to see what we want them to notice most.

I know many of you already have mastered these principals both inside and outside your store.  I see you sweeping your sidewalks and entrances daily, pulling weeds, washing windows and vacuuming before you open because you already value your customers' first impression and welcome them into your business.

If you haven't walked into your store through the front door lately to see what your customers see when they walk in, I suggest that you do.  For many it will confirm the good work they have already done and for some it may show them things that could be changed for the better so they can take action that will not only help their business but help make downtown look much better.

Downtown Hutchinson has a talented Design Committee that meets each month and would be happy to offer suggestions that may change an impression or two.  With more events and activities putting people on Main Street, a clean sharp look, handsome displays, and signage can do a lot to persuade someone to step inside and see the rest of your operation and I'm confident you will take it from there.

A lot of dedicated people are working hard to make downtown a better place.  If you are interested in helping or need more information about Downtown Hutchinson activities, events, design assistance, or volunteer opportunities, please call our office at 694-2677 or email jims@hutchgov.com.
