Summer Concert Series
Kelly Band

Spring is here, school is out and everyone wants to be outdoors having fun with friends and family.  An opportunity to do just that plus spend time in beautiful Downtown Hutchinson presents itself on Saturday, June 5th.

The Kelly Band, a group of talented musicians devoted to the playing and preservation of Irish music, will be in concert on Saturday, June 5th, at Avenue A Park from 11:30am - 1:30pm.  From the Kansas City area, the Kelly Band has entertained audiences at folk festivals, cultural centers, and concerts throughout the Midwest. Their music combines their past experiences with a deep understanding of where Irish music has been and they bring it full circle with new ideas mixed with time honored traditions. The variety of instruments they play, including fiddle, guitar, mandolin, flute, button accordion, whistle, bones, bodhran, and bass, combined with happy haunting vocals, pay homage to the true spirit of Irish music.

The Concert is FREE and everyone is invited.

The Kelly Band is the first of the SUMMER CONCERT SERIES sponsored by the Hutchinson/Reno Arts and Humanities Council (HRAH) in partnership with Downtown Hutchinson.

Kansas State High School Rodeo Association
State Finals Rodeo is Coming to Hutchinson

Plan on seeing a lot of cowboys and cowgirls Downtown June 9th through the 13th; they'll be easy to spot wearing their rodeo number everywhere they go.

Downtown Hutchinson is planning a hot dog lunch to welcome them at Noon on Saturday, June 12th in Avenue A Park.  This will be the first time the event has been held outside of Topeka in 50 years, so let's do our best to make them feel welcome!

From Director Jim Seitnater

Help us keep Downtown looking great this summer by keeping weeds sprayed/pulled and sidewalks clean!  With all the recent rain we've had and expected temperatures in the 80's, weeds are going to start growing rapidly.  Let's all do our part and start early with spraying/weeding while weeds are still small and easy to take care of.  We're proud of Downtown and want it to look its best for shoppers and visitors.

A lot of dedicated people are working hard to make downtown a better place.   If you are interested in helping or need more information about Downtown Hutchinson activities, events or volunteer opportunities , please call our office at 694-2677 or e-mail jims@hutchgov.com.

DESIGN COMMITTEE NEWS - Chair Lovella Kelley

The Committee discussed obtaining renderings of what they would like to see in the buildings next to the Labor Temple
For example, shops opening into the empty lot and the a pathway to the Art Center.  They would like to obtain renderings of others in other communities so the community could see what it could look like.  Paducah, Kentucky has some good examples of this.

Jim Seitnater talked about some of the things he heard and saw at the National Main Street Conference in Oklahoma City recently.  Ron Kelley was a guest speaker at one of the sessions.  He took pictures of a median design in Oklahoma City that could possibly be used from Avenue C to Carey Park, which could even be wide enough for the bike trail.

The Committee discussed the need for public parking signs and for shops to be open possibly until at least 7:00 p.m.

The DHRP Board Retreat is scheduled for July 19th at 4:00 p.m.  Committee members are invited to attend.

The Committee wants to put together an outline for public art as soon as possible.  The project needs public input, specific ideas, a time line, artist call, newspaper coverage, and renderings for art.  Committee members agreed that some representation of the salt industry is important because of its history in the community.

Planning for the Art Tour continues.  Directional signs for downtown have been selected and now the Committee is waiting for pricing and a time line.
