What's It All About?

Tom Wilkens is filling in for pastor John during August. He is developing a series of sermons under the theme of "The Meaning of Life Seen from the End of Life" or "What's It All About, Alfie?" (Tom remembers the Michael Caine version; young whippersnappers will have seen the Jude Law version.) The sermons will have at least a nodding acquaintance with the appointed Scripture readings for each week, though they might be better described as generally Bible-based rather than specifically text-based. Here are the weekly sermon titles:
  • First week: "Of Symptoms and Systems"
  • Second week: "A Dad and a Daughter Do a Dialogue"
    (Tom and Kim together again)
  • Third week: "Have You Found the Rhythm?"
  • Fourth week: "Churched, Unchurched, Dechurched or Rechurched: What Difference Does It Make?"
  • Fifth week: "True Religion: What It Is and What It Ain't"

Reading Buddies
It's hard to believe the first day of school is a few weeks away.  Our Reading Buddies outreach with Hollymead Elementary School was a great success on a small scale this past year.  Twelve people from Peace read and wrote for one half hour each week with a struggling reader.  The first grade teachers report a significant impact on their motivation and achievement of the students who were mentored in this way.

We would like to grow the program this coming year, and so it would be very helpful to hear soon from folks who might be interested in joining the effort.  There is a very low time commitment, but a high return in satisfaction and positive impact.

Read 2 Read Mission
Don't forget our Books for Kids mission this summer.  This is an opportunity to show your children how they can make a difference in their global and local communities.  Children are encouraged to line up sponsors who will "pay" them for reading books over the summer months.  They can pay per book or sponsor them for an amount of time spent reading.  The money will be collected at the end of the summer and will go towards purchasing books for children in Honduras and Southwest Virginia.
