Who Is Your Hero?

I need a hero
I'm holding out for a hero 'til the end of the night
He's gotta be strong
And he's gotta be fast
And he's gotta be fresh from the fight
- Holding Out for a Hero

We've got a thing for heroes.  We look up to them, admire them, follow them, put them on pedestals and try to imitate them.  What is it they've got, that we don't?  Is it some sort of super power or charisma or charm?  Maybe it's passion.  Donald Miller in Blue Like Jazz says that -

"If you believe something, passionately, people will follow you. People hardly care what you believe, as long as you believe something. If you are passionate about something, people will follow you because they think you know something they don't, some clue to the meaning of the universe. Passion is tricky, though, because it can point to nothing as easily as it points to something."

If heroes have this kind of influence on us, maybe we need to consider: Who are your heroes or heroines?  What are they passionate about?  Where are you willing to follow them? When will you start?  How will you imitate them?

You paid careful attention to the way we lived among you, and determined to live that way yourselves. In imitating us, you imitated the Master. Although great trouble accompanied the Word, you were able to take great joy from the Holy Spirit!-taking the trouble with the joy, the joy with the trouble. - 1 Thessalonians 1:5-6
