Easter People
|
I am the true vine, and my Father is the vine-grower. He removes every branch in me that bears no fruit. Every branch that bears fruit he prunes to make it bear more fruit. You have already been cleansed by the word that I have spoken to you. Abide in me as I abide in you. Just as the branch cannot bear fruit by itself unless it abides in the vine, neither can you unless you abide in me. I am the vine, you are the branches. Those who abide in me and I in them bear much fruit, because apart from me you can do nothing. - John 15:1-5
Easter people are called to abide or remain. That sounds like kind of a passive mode for a disciple - shouldn't we be active, going out into the world and doing good work. Jesus reminds us that we can't bear fruit by ourselves, that apart from him we can do nothing and therefore, first we are to remain in Christ.
I have said these things to you so that my joy may be in you, and that your joy may be complete.
- John 15:11

The Sabbatical Files
|
As plans were being made for Pastor John's sabbatical, we were blessed to find three outstanding pastors, each ready to substitute for a month this summer.
Who are the substitute pastors? Eric Childers will serve in June. Eric graduated from Lutheran Theological Seminary in Philadelphia. He is currently a graduate student at UVA in the area of higher education. Eric has provided preaching and teaching assistance to Peace in the past.
Bill Stewart will serve in July. Bill is a very familiar face to Peace, after all he served as the pastor of Peace from 1988 to 2000. And for those of you that don't recognize Bill, you probably know his daughter, Dawn Stewart Eadie.
Tom Wilkens will serve in August. His name might also sound familiar, Tom is Kim Wilken's dad. Tom served for 3 years as a pastor in Wisconsin and for 31 years as a professor of theology at Texas Lutheran University.
What is their role this summer? They will provide leadership for preaching and worship, participate in the worship design process and administer emergency pastoral care
Next week we'll identify who to contact for what while Pastor John is away.

| ANNOUNCING: SUMMER WORSHIP SCHEDULE |
Peace Lutheran has not typically changed the summer worship schedule in the past, but Pastor John's sabbatical makes the summer of 2009 somewhat of a special situation. Therefore we are announcing a different worship schedule beginning the first weekend in June (June 6-7), and continuing through the Labor Day weekend (September 5-6).
There will be one worship service on Saturday at 5:00 PM, and one worship service on Sunday at 9:30 AM. (In other words, the two Sunday services will be combined into one service for the summer.)
Here is the rationale. A two-service summer schedule will make it easier on guest pastors and staff (when staff will have increased responsibilities in Pastor John's absence). It will also be easier to schedule worship servants (who are spread thin over 3 services in the summer). Two fuller services would also create larger worshiping bodies, contributing to a greater morale and spirit, as contrasted with three less than full services with summer's typically smaller attendance. We also feel that this summer will be a good time to bring the congregation together by combining the Sunday services. To take advantage of this combined fellowship, we will schedule some times of fellowship surrounding the Sunday service in an effort to bring people together.

| Annual Meeting & Sunday School Celebration |
May 17th brings two events - first of all, we will hold our annual congregational meeting at 9:45am in the Sanctuary. We need a quorum in order to vote on the constitution. Please come!
After worship on that day, we invite you to come and celebrate the end of the Sunday School year with us at the potluck picnic. This will be the last day of Sunday School and we will celebrate with Ice Cream Sundaes, outdoor games and other activities. Bring a dish to share and dress for fun!
