40 Days with the Lord's Prayer

Give us today our daily bread.

When we see a need, we generally do want to figure out a way to help, but often times the need can seem too large or frightening or foreign, so we don't even know where to begin.  When we start facing these needs as a community, the needs don't get less complicated, but by bringing together our unique gifts, talents and resources; we can begin to address them more fully.  We've seen the fruits of our labors through activities like PACEM, a ministry of mercy to shelter homeless people during the winter.  We've also experienced the power of a shared voice through IMPACT, a ministry of justice to those who don't have a voice.

Today, we pray for daily bread:
"When we pray for daily bread, we pray for it all - for ourselves and for everyone else.  No exceptions.  And it could be done. It is not a question of scarcity.  God created our beautiful blue-green planet in such as way that it naturally provides in abundance all that is needed for all people to live well.  God continues to give daily bread in abundance. The problem is one of distribution, and the will to distribute fairly.  And that's our problem, not God's. And to overcome that problem, we pray for our daily bread." - Lenten Journey, day 20

Signposts of God's Love

Today we can address some specific needs as a community:
The Thomas Jefferson Area Food Bank provides a ministry of mercy for those who are hungry.  Demand for food bank services is now up 20 to 30 percent statewide.  We have pre-purchased Kroger food boxes.  These food boxes are provided by Kroger at less than cost and are an invaluable resource for the food bank when individuals and families make requests.  The Kroger food boxes are $10.  If you would like to make a donation, use the envelopes provided in the pew.  If you write a check, make it out to Peace Lutheran and write food bank in the memo line.

For 3 years, IMPACT has been tackling the complex issue of affordable housing.  The goal has been to raise awareness of the lack of housing for those in the lowest income brackets and to increase affordable units available to these individuals and families.  We've definitely made strides in raising awareness of the issue culminating in the The City of Charlottesville, Albemarle County and the UVa Joint Task Force Affordable Housing Report.  Now we will seek commitments from the City and County to address the housing report recommendations in order to add more affordable housing stock.

This year, IMPACT has also taken on Education, another large issue.  Through the research process, addressing the early education gap has been identified as a key problem.

You can commit to attend the Nehemiah Action on March 30 at 6:15pm by signing up on the board and taking one of the invites from the pew.  Invitations are not necessary to get into the event, but having one will speed your entry process.  Peace Lutheran Church has committed to bring out 60 people to this event where over 2,000 are expected from a variety of faith traditions who all hear the call to "do justice".  Friends, neighbors, co-workers, and youth all count toward this commitment!
