40 Days with the Lord's Prayer
|
Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name...
"Our Father... If God is our Father, then God is not only my Father. We share a Father. We are part of something larger than ourselves - a family, as it were. If God is our Father, than all other people are, in a profound sense, our sisters and brothers. We belong to and are responsible for each other. You will notice that there are no first person pronouns in this prayer. In no way is the Lord's prayer ever my prayer. It is always our prayer, and whenever we pray it our attention should turn not only to our own needs but also to the needs of others. We never pray this prayer alone. Whenever we pray these words we stand with every other person - whether they pray this prayer or not." - Lenten Journey, day two

Spring ACTS Course The Virginia Synod's ACTS program is gearing up for their spring course called Filling the Reservoir: The Prayerful Life and Daily Ministry. This class will introduce us to the church's classical disciplines and help us make the connection between personal prayer and our daily ministry in the world. Several time-honored devotional practices will be explored, including: "centering prayer," lectio divina, Luther's "Garland of Four Strands," the examen, and a "rule" of life.
The course will be led by the Rev. Dr. John Largen, who is the Pastor to the Seminary Community at our Lutheran Theological Southern Seminary in Columbia, South Carolina. In his role as Seminary Pastor, he offers special programs in Christian spirituality to help students, faculty, staff, and family members to grow into a healthy life of prayer and service. A Virginia Synod pastor, he grew up at St. John, Roanoke; served the former Quicksburg Parish in Shenandoah County; and, presently belongs to Gladesboro Church in Carroll County.
