Transfiguration of our Lord
|
Jesus took Peter, James, and John and led them up a high mountain. His
appearance changed from the inside out, right before their eyes. His
clothes shimmered, glistening white, whiter than any bleach could make
them. (Mark 9:2-3)
This weekend, we are taking a breather from the big idea - in worship planning we call it a palette cleanser.
The church calendar recognizes the season of Epiphany from January 6 until the last Sunday before Ash Wednesday which is celebrated as the Transfiguration of our Lord. This weekend, we'll do a quick review of Jesus' ministry up to the transfiguration event and then we'll go on to discover what a turning point this was in Jesus' ministry, in the lives of his disciples and in our lives today.

Ash Wednesday Service
|
"Ash Wednesday is the Wednesday of the seventh week before Easter and
the first day of Lent. The day is named for the practice of imposing
ashes, a practice which many Lutheran congregations have found to be a
very meaningful part of the Ash Wednesday liturgy. Using ashes as a sign of repentance is an ancient practice, often
mentioned in the Bible (e.g., Jonah 3:5-9; Job 42:6; Jeremiah 6:26;
Matthew 11:21). The early Christians adopted the use of ashes from
Jewish practice as an external mark of penitence." -reprinted from the ELCA website article, Why and how do we use ashes on Ash Wednesday? When: February 25 at 7:00pm

Signposts of God's Love

SARA (Sexual Assault Resource Agency) Request SARA has requested our help in supporting their work with survivors of sexual assault. "We are extremely grateful for the work you are doing in our community, and look forward to further involvement with your congregation! SARA is seeking new clothing for survivors of sexual assault when they seek medical attention at the hospital."
In particular, they are looking for donations of new sweat pants, underwear and socks. This simple provision can help a person feel cared for at a time when she or he is feeling very hurt and alone.
We'll be collecting these items this upcoming weekend through the first Wednesday Lenten service on March 4. The goal is to complete a set of 20 packages of clothes. A collection box will be placed in front of the sanctuary. Contact: Kim Wilkens, kimxtom@gmail.com
Salvation Army Meal Ministry The next date for volunteers to serve supper is March 6. Volunteers gather at the Transient Center Kitchen at 5pm to prepare and serve the meal. No prior kitchen experience is required. Contact: Cheryl Thomasen, 985-9497 When: First Friday every month at 5:00pm Where: Salvation Army, 207 Ridge Street, 295-4058
