Walking Wet
|
Some live by love thy neighbor as thyself, others by first do no harm or take no more than you need. What if the mightiest word is love?
Love beyond marital, filial, national, love that casts a widening pool of light, love with no need to pre-empt grievance.
In today's sharp sparkle, this winter air, any thing can be made, any sentence begun. On the brink, on the brim, on the cusp, praise song for walking forward in that light. - Elizabeth Alexander
The Christian faith is not just a religion; it is a relationship, a relationship of love. Jesus constantly and consistently reminds us of this by his words and actions. This week we'll revisit Jesus' answer to the question 'Which commandment is the first of all?' Jesus answered, 'The first is, "Hear, O Israel: the Lord our God, the Lord is one; you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind, and with all your strength." The second is this, "You shall love your neighbour as yourself." There is no other commandment greater than these.' - Mark 12: 29-31

Make an IMPACT on Affordable Housing
|
If you have had a chance to speak with any of our guests from PACEM, then you may have found out that some of them are working and in desperate need of housing they can afford. As part of IMPACT, we have the opportunity to ensure that creating affordable housing in our community is a priority.
The joint Charlottesville/Albemarle County/UVA Affordable Housing Task Force will be presenting their recommendations to local government in early February. A strong turnout from IMPACT will show our support for implementation of these recommendations. IMPACT will have two speakers present at each meeting and during the public comments section (the opening part of the agenda for both meetings), they will use their time to speak about those recommendations IMPACT will be supporting. Your presence is very important especially considering these recommendations are a direct result of the work of our housing committee and commitments won at IMPACT's first Nehemiah Action.
- City Council Meeting Feb 2, 7pm at City Hall (located on the downtown mall), 2nd floor in City Council Chambers.
- County Supervisor Meeting Feb 4, 9am County Office building on 401 McIntire Road, on the second floor in Lane Auditorium.

Calling All Worship Servants
|
We are in need of worship servants! In particular, we are looking for children
who would like to serve as acolytes. We are also in need of teens and adults who would be willing to usher. We will provide training and opportunities to be mentored by an "expert". Other ways you can serve in worship include: assisting minister, altar guild, nursery caregiver, reader and projectionist. Contact: Jenny Cudahy, cudahyj@msn.com

40 Days of Love What is one of your primary goals in life? If you are thinking that having a fulfilling marriage, a better relationship with your child or more caring friendships then the "40 Days of Love" is the perfect short-term study for you. Tom Holliday, from Rick Warren's Saddleback Church, will come to Albemarle HS on Sunday, January 25th for the launch of the 40 Days of Love program. Holladay is author of the new book The Relationship Principles of Jesus. Nothing matters more than relationships and no one understands them better than Jesus. Based on an exhaustive study of what Jesus did and said about relationships, the book guides readers on a forty-day journey that will bring new health and richness to their marriages, families, friendships, and all the relationships in their lives.
Laurie Niestrath will lead a new Sunday School offering for adults which will focus on how to love more authentically as we become more like Jesus. You do not have to attend the Jan 25 event to participate in the small group study. When: begins Sunday, February 1 @ 9:45am for 6 weeks Where: South Campus Contact: Laurie Niestrath, laurieniestrath@yahoo.com
God Views The Adult Discipleship team presents God Views - a video-based curriculum that helps us re-explore our understanding of God. One's view of God is the most fundamental element of personal Christian formation. To misperceive God may result in a lifetime of avoiding God's presence. But to see God clearly is to discover that the most powerful being in the universe is our compassionate Father.
During this series, we will examine six of the most common false views of God, and four true pictures. We will also experience a variety of Bible studies and creative exercises to help us develop a more intimate, authentic relationship with God. This DVD series is narrated and led by Curt Cloninger, a talented teacher and comedian. Each class is "self-contained," which means that you can step into the class at any point in the twelve week series. When: begins Sunday, February 1 @ 9:45am for 12 weeks Where: South Campus Contact: Jenny Cudahy, cudahyj@msn.com
