Reformation

This weekend we take a break from doing a big idea series to focus on Reformation Day.

"Reformation Day and All Saints Day are fitting times to reflect with you on Lutheran identity. We have opportunity to claim the gifts of the ongoing Lutheran reforming movement as we remember that we, as Lutherans, belong to the communion of all the saints.

Lutheran identity, grounded in Scripture, the Confessions, and ecumenical creeds, will at times emphasize those theological convictions that set us apart from other church bodies. Yet, I wonder if it is not more helpful to think of Lutheran identity in terms of what we bring as a part of the Body of Christ, even as we are open to receiving the gifts of others.

Certainly identity has to do with what distinguishes one from another. It seems that as nations, as cultures, as church bodies - even as members of families - we can become almost singularly preoccupied with that dimension of identity. When that is the case, we sometimes describe others in the most pejorative light, so that we might appear more clear and secure about our identity.

It is important to claim the uniqueness of who we are as Lutherans. However, is not the greater challenge to think of Lutheran identity in the context of our relatedness? What does it mean to be the ELCA in relationship with other Lutherans throughout the world? What does it mean to be Lutheran Christians within the one, holy, catholic, and apostolic Church? What does it mean to be Christian in this world of many faiths? What does it mean to be human, sharing with other life forms the rich diversity but increasingly threatened existence of God's creation?" - Mark S. Hanson, ELCA Presiding Bishop

IMPACT Assembly
Don't forget - it's this Monday!   We have committed to bring out at least 20 people from Peace.  Childcare will be available and if your children participate in the assembly itself, they can sign in and get counted. This assembly kicks off our third year of coming together with many other local congregations to work toward bringing a greater degree of justice and fairness to the Charlottesville and Albermarle area.

Turkey Drive
As Thanksgiving nears, we are beginning our "Turkey Drive" for Hollymead Elementary School. We have created a partnership between Peace Lutheran Church and the staff at Hollymead, the elementary school within our neighborhood. They know that they can reach out and call us with specific needs they have, and they already know of 15 families who cannot afford a Thanksgiving Turkey. If you would like to purchase a turkey, or provide funds toward one, please contact Jenny Cudahy at cudahyj@msn.com or 760-5080.
