Practicing the Faith

What do you think of when you hear the "E" word?  You know, Evangelism!  It's not often pleasant thoughts.  Heck, the American Heritage Dictionary's definition of e-van-gel-ism is kind of scary - "Zealous preaching and dissemination of the gospel, as through missionary work."  Do you think that is what Jesus had in mind?  Here are some other thoughts on evangelism.

"For more than a century, the evangelistic efforts espoused by most American churches have been transactional. I proclaim the message of Jesus to a non-Christian.  It is now his or her responsibility to listen, to ask questions, to wrestle with doubts or fears, and ultimately to capitulate. ... The call of Jesus, however, is that we make disciples, not decisions." - Glenn McDonald, Disciple Making Church, pg. 208

"What's new is at the very center of the evangelical message we have been given to share with the world. For example, I believe that today our job is to tell everybody who will listen that, because of Jesus, there are no more "lines" between people of different races, that we are all children of the same heavenly Parent. It's our job to tell people that God has blessed the human family with plenty of resources to go around and that we are responsible for making sure everyone has what they need. It is our job to tell people that the true measure of our lives isn't how much power or wealth we have but, rather, that we are loved unconditionally by the One who created us all and that we are free, therefore, to serve one another in love. And it is our job to live our lives like we believe all of this is true." - Kelly Fryer, Reclaiming the "E" Word

Fall Programming

The Big Idea Sunday school will continue to meet in the sanctuary on Sunday mornings at 9:45am.  This is an interactive time to explore thoughts, ideas and questions that come up during a worship series.  No experience is necessary and there is no homework.

9/21 - Small Group book study for parents
We are offering a five-six week "short-term" small group for parents. This is a great opportunity for parents to get to know each other as they learn to navigate this busy time in their lives. Participants  will be reading and discussing the book, Faith Begins at Home by Mark Holman. This book combines inspirational stories and practical ideas with Biblical truth to help families rediscover how to bring the basics of faith back into their home. This class will be led by Beth Williams Caffeine provided.
When:  Sundays @ 9:45am, starting 9/21 for 5 weeks
Where:  South Campus

9/23 - The Heart of Christianity book study
It's not to late to join the Heart of Christianity book study.  We'll be covering Chapter 2 - Faith: The Way of the Heart on September 23rd. Join us as we explore the chapters of this book and become part of the "unending conversation" to discern the heart of Christianity.
When:  Tuesday nights @ 7:30 - 9:00pm
Where:  South Campus

Triad Immersion Experience
Our first triad immersion experience will be to help with a Habitat for Humanity build.  The purpose of the immersion is to expand the triad experience to include the faith practice of having the feet of a servant.  You can participate in this experience by working at the site or preparing lunch for the workers.  The immersion experience is open to all friends and family of Peace and is a good way to "check out" what triads are all about.

What: Please wear work boots or athletic shoes, dress for outdoor work.  All tools and safety gear will be provided, as well as water, though you may bring extra water bottles if you wish.  If you would like to prepare lunch for the workers, we'll need to coordinate who brings what.
When:  Saturday, September 27, 8:45am - 3:30pm
Where:  Paton Street: From UVA, take University/Main St east.  Turn right on 10th St.  Turn right on Cherry Ave.  Turn right on Hanover St. A half block up the street at the first corner, turn left.  The build site will be on the left.  Please park on Paton street.
Contact:  Eric Schmitz (eric.schmitz@earthlink.net) or Kim Wilkens (kimxtom@gmail.com or 825-3698).  Please RVSP by 9/21.
