Practicing the Faith
|
This week we learn that through our struggles in praying, that prayer involves a process of learning, listening, and submitting.
Gracious God of all creation:
On this day, we remember our neighbors, of different nations and backgrounds, who died in the attacks we simply call 9-11.
Hear our prayers for their loved ones. May they know the comfort that comes from knowledge and love of you.
May they be surrounded by communities that care for them, even as you continue to care for this fragile and suffering world.
God, we confess that we cannot make sense of the violence inflicted by your children on one another. But even more than understanding, we ask for the strength to be peacemakers, servants of your will for reconciliation.
It has been seven years since the senseless attacks, but we are still in pain. Give us the courage, God, to work for the day when hatred and violence will cease.
Help us to be those who break cycles of retribution, even as we advocate for justice with bold persistence.
Help us to work for that time, envisioned by the prophet, when no infant dies needlessly, when no one labors in vain or bears children for calamity, when even wolf and lamb feed together and no one hurts or destroys your holy creation.
God, be our strength, and may we feel your loving touch today and always.
Amen.

Fall Programming

9/14 @ 9:45am - Sunday school begins
Join other Older, Wiser Lutherans (OWLs) at Peace for Bible study led by Louise Ward. The topic this week is A Maturing Life: Why do I need to grow spiritually? This group will meet at the South Campus. If you need directions or help getting over to there, meet in the church lobby at 9:40am.
The Big Idea Sunday school will meet in the sanctuary. This is an interactive time to explore thoughts, ideas and questions that come up during a worship series. No experience is necessary and there is no homework.
9/16 - The Heart of Christianity book study begins
Marcus Borg's The Heart of Christianity: Rediscovering a Life of Faith already has several people at Peace thinking, talking, and wanting to dig deeper into what it means to be a Christian today. Join us as we explore the chapters of this book and become part of the "unending conversation" to discern the heart of Christianity.
When: Tuesday nights @ 7:30 - 9:00pm

9/17 - LifeKeys study begins
LifeKeys is a spiritually-based comprehensive program for discovering your Life Gifts, Spiritual Gifts, Personality Type, Values and Passions
--in other words, explore a multi-faceted approach to understanding the best ways to add meaning and purpose to your life!
When: Wednesday nights @ 7:00 - 8:30pm

Signposts of God's Love

Triad Immersion Experience
Our first triad immersion experience will be to help with a Habitat build. The purpose of the immersion is to expand the triad experience to include the faith practice of having the feet of a servant. You can participate in this experience by working at the site or preparing lunch for the workers. The immersion experience is open to all friends and family of Peace and is a good way to "check out" what triads are all about.
What: Please wear work boots or athletic shoes, dress for outdoor work. All tools and safety gear will be provided, as well as water, though you may bring extra water bottles if you wish. If you would like to prepare lunch for the workers, we'll need to coordinate who brings what.
When: Saturday, September 27, 8:45am - 3:30pm
Where: Paton Street: From UVA, take University/Main St east. Turn right on 10th St. Turn right on Cherry Ave. Turn right on Hanover St. A half block up the street at the first corner, turn left. The build site will be on the left. Please park on Paton street.
