Talking the Bible, Having Words with God

This week we'll be talking about the story of the Bible. How would you summarize the Bible? Is it possible?  What are it's main themes?  Does it follow a typical storyline with a beginning, rising action, climax, falling action & resolution?  It can be risky to try and boil down the Bible into a cohesive and concise summary because of its very nature - it is a collection of many books of varying styles within a book.  When we look at the Bible as the story of God's involvement with God's people, is there a narrative we can identify?  And where do we fit into the storyline?

These are the type of questions we'll be pondering this weekend as the Talking the Bible, Having Words with God series continues.  Do you have questions about the Bible?  We want to talk about them.  You can submit them anonymously @ peacepods.blogspot.com or get them to Pastor John.

SonHarvest County Fair

We had an amazing week, filled with the Holy Spirit and LOTS of energy.  Our study was of Galatians 5:22-23, which is

"But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control."  (NIV)

The children moved between Bible Study, crafts, games and snack, and music.  There were special activities at each.

Thank you so much for all who participated in Vacation Bible School in one way or another - the property committee, people who donated items, VBS helpers, VBS teachers, children, and parents!!!

Children from Vacation Bible School will participate in the Worship services on Saturday, July 19th and the Sunday, July 20th at the 11 AM service by singing some of the songs that they learned during Vacation Bible School.  We will celebrate after each service with ice cream socials!

We are planning a VBS Reunion and Community Gathering on Sunday, September 7th from 12-4 PM at the church, so please mark your calendars.  Join us for great food, fun games, and wonderful fellowship as we reach out to our neighbors!

Can Kids Be Disciples?

Yes they can and ARE! All rising 6th, 7th, 8th and 9th graders are invited to participate in 2 workshops to learn and practice protecting themselves and protecting others from direct and indirect bullying. After all.. Jesus is No Wimp! Topics will be centered around scripture and will include; learning and practicing what it means to be assertive, differences between self-defense and revenge, and to explore one aspect of what this 'whole discipleship thing' looks like for middle/high schoolers.

So join us on Sunday August 17th and Sunday August 24th from 12pm - 3pm (lunch will be provided). We will meet in the Fellowship Hall then travel together to the South Annex.

If you have any questions, please feel free to email Laura McAfee wanderingspryte@yahoo.com

It's harvest time!
Don't miss this opportunity to serve in our  hometown: Join friends from Peace as we grab our work gloves and venture out to the garden sponsored by the Quality Community Council (QCC) farm located in the Friendship Court Neighborhood for summer harvesting. Children and adults are needed to come help the neighborhood pick, clean and deliver vegetables! The QCC gardens are designed to improve the diets of low income families with veggies harvested in their own backyards.
When: Friday afternoons
Where: The Quality Community Council Urban Farm at Sixth Street and Monicello Avenue
What to bring: work gloves and water bottles (and sunscreen!)
RSVP:  Jenny Cudahy, cudahyj@msn.com or 978-7938

Yard and Bake Sale
Peace's Annual Yard and Bake Sale begins at 8am on August 9th.  This is a Thrivent Financial for Lutherans Chapter Activity and proceeds from the sale will be supplemented by funds from Thrivent.  We use the proceeds to help families in need in our community.  Starting Monday, August 4th through Friday, August 8th, donated items can be dropped off at church during the day.  On Wednesday and Friday evenings, the church will remain open from 6:00 to 9:00pm for drop-offs.  We also need volunteers to help out with sorting items, working during the sale and clean-up.
Yard sale contact:  Joyce Lawrence, 964-0409 or broadleaf514@comcast.net
Bake sale contact: Dot Utter, 978-2184

Leadership News

Thank you's go out to Marilyn Young, PLC Treasurer and to Karen Burkholder, PLC Financial Secretary.  They have served our congregation faithfully the last two years.  Answering the call to fill these positions are Susan Wilkinson - Treasurer and Keith Hammon - Financial Secretary.

A reminder that if you borrow any items from the church you do need to fill out a property form which can be found in the Church Office.  This way we can keep track of items and make sure they are at the church when needed.  Thank you for your cooperation.
