In or Out?
|
For those who are interested, on the next two Sundays (May 11 & May 18), during the Sunday School hour (9:45am) we'll follow up our discussion from April 27 about "In or Out?". Specifically, we'll discuss the welcoming of gay and lesbian people, within the terms we set out on April 27: 1. Unwelcome and not OK? 2. Welcome and not OK? 3. Welcome and OK? I will begin the discussion by providing what I think is a rationale for each of the three positions. We will also refer to the ELCA "Draft Social Statement on Human Sexuality."

Older, Wiser Lutherans (OWLs)
|
If you are willing to admit that you are an OWL, an "older, wiser" Lutheran, and you are not offended to be called an OWL, then you are cordially invited to Sunday Brunch at 9:45am on June 1. Join us to kick off our ministry for Older Adults. Get to know your fellow OWLs and enjoy some time together. If you need transportation for this event, please call Jon Williams at 973-5341.
Also, mark your calendars for our senior adult Small Group Bible study on Sunday mornings beginning June 8th. This is a special time of fellowship and discernment for older adult ministry at Peace.

Concession Stand Service Join members of Peace as we again venture out to serve together in our neighborhood! On Tuesday, May 13 and Wednesday, May 14 we will be helping out at the Concession Stand at the ballfields at Hollymead Elementary School. We will be selling snacks and running the grill. (Wear a Peace t-shirt if you have one!) Simply show up at the Concession stand at 6pm and report for work. Plan to stay until around 8pm. Contact Jenny Cudahy at 978-7938 if you have questions!
Restarting a Reading Buddy Program One way that Peace could reach out in love to our neighborhood would be to restart a reading buddies program to first graders at Hollymead, Baker-Butler, and/or Woodbrook schools. This program had existed in the past, but lapsed in recent years due to the lack of a coordinator. The coordinator job is a half-time volunteer position, which could be shared among two or three people, making it much easier to add to a busy schedule. The coordinator matches reading buddies and appropriate books with students, and keeps track of the list of buddies and their schedules. Being a reading buddy is easy and rewarding, and requires only a small time commitment. You just sign up, show up, and help a child read a book. The school, through the coordinator(s), provides guidelines, suggestions, and materials.
If you are interested in helping to coordinate such a program, or in volunteering as a reading buddy, please contact: Ken Hymes - 806-9126 or happytklz@gmail.com
As we gather names of interested people, we will keep you informed of progress towards starting the program. We hope to have this going in the fall, pending interest and coordination with school personnel.
