Dear Church Mailbag

Dear Church,

After many years of being forced to attend your worship services with my father at the helm, I spent several more years trying to discern where you belonged in my life. I ignored you, but eventually came back. I discovered I was comfortable within your walls, enjoyed the fellowship of other members, and knew that I could be of service in some capacity. I spent a dozen years at a traditional Lutheran church where my husband was born and raised. I was bored. My spirituality became stagnant. I was only rejuvinated in youth events which were lively with wonderful praise music and inspiring speakers. I felt the need to find a church that would have these elements. I have found such a congregation! It seems, for the first time, I am loving you. The music is wonderful and lively, traditional and praising. The sermons are inspiring. Best of all, the members all want you to grow and reach out to the community, both locally and globally. What an awesome place to be.

Power in the Spirit
Now is time to plan ahead for the Virginia Synod's Power in the Spirit, an annual conference held on the campus of Roanoke College in Salem, VA, from Thursday July 10th through Saturday July 12th. This is a uniquely Lutheran gathering of lay people and clergy to engage in adult learning, conversation, worship, and fellowship.

This year's theme is "God Gives! We Care! We Share!", a venture into how God would have us share his gifts through us in each of our callings -- as members of families, as workers, as citizens, as volunteers, as church members, and as cohabitants in God's beautiful, yet fragile, creation. The keynote speaker will be The Reverend Charles M. Lane, author of Ask, Thank, Tell, an engaging book on congregational stewardship ministry. Our Bible Leader will be The Reverend Andrea Degroot-Nesdahl, who will lead us to the connections between stewardship and discipleship.

Power in the Spirit is organized into four common sessions involving the Keynote Speaker and the Bible Leader, sandwiched around four elective workshop sessions where you may choose from an array of twenty-eight small group learning opportunities. There is daily time for organized worship as well as individual meditation and prayer. The program includes meals and lodging at the College, on an ala carte basis. Total combined cost is $215. Scholarships to help defray costs are available.

Typically Peace is well represented at this gathering, with the largest contingent the past several years. So, know that you won't be alone, and there are sure to be some familiar faces on hand. We often arrange to carpool. We have also been known to "sponsor" an ad hoc dorm party. This event has been known to be habit-forming.
Community Service Opportunity
Join members of Peace as we again venture out to serve together in our neighborhood! On Tuesday, May 13 and Wednesday, May 14th we will be helping out at the Concession Stand at the ballfields at Hollymead Elementary School. We will be selling snacks and running the grill. (Wear a Peace t-shirt if you have one!) Simply show up at the Concession stand at 6pm and report for work. Plan to stay until around 8pm. Contact Jenny Cudahy at 978-7938 if you have questions!
