A Thought
 from the Garden
Beautiful Lavender
The one red leaf,
the last of its clan,
That dances as often as dance it can,
Hanging so light,
and hanging so high,
On the topmost twig that looks up at the sky.

The Best Time
To Sow Grass Seed
Is Now!
How To Video
No one has to tell you that, unless you were able to diligently see to the watering needs of your landscape, this was a tough season on everything including your lawn. September is the best month to sow grass seed so, if you take advantage of the opportunity now to do the repair or replacement work that's needed in your yard, you'll be way ahead of the game this coming spring.

If you aren't sure exactly how you should go about taking care of problem areas in your lawn this time of year stop by the garden center and chat with one of the Lawn Pros; they'll answer all of your questions and equip you with everything you need to know. If you've done the preliminaries and already have your grass seed, starter fertilize and have had the pH checked but still want to know what to do next to ensure success, click on the image above and get the information from George, himself!

When you click on the image you'll be taken to our "How-To Videos" page. Once there simply click on "How to easily seed your lawn and grow beautiful grass." This summer hasn't been easy on your lawn but we're here to make doing what's necessary to have a beautiful lawn easy on you!

Garden Natives
American Hazel Nut
Corylus americana
Are you looking for a very versatile, undemanding shrub that can be used as a hedge for screening, in an orchard or edible landscape or in naturalizing and woodland gardens? Look no farther than the American Hazel Nut also called American Filbert and American Hazel.

American Hazel Nut Growing to about 12 feet tall at maturity, with a spread of 8 feet this shrub is suitable for planting under power lines. By "undemanding" we mean "This shrub performs well in both full sun and full shade. It is very adaptable to both dry and moist locations, and should do just fine under average home landscape conditions. It is considered to be drought-tolerant, and thus makes an ideal choice for xeriscaping or the moisture-conserving landscape. It is not particular as to soil type or pH. It is highly tolerant of urban pollution and will even thrive in inner city environments."

American Hazel Nut/Filberts The small, sweet and easy-to-crack nuts are a favorite in mixed Christmas nuts, by themselves and for cooking and baking.

Chuck Harmon

We are proud of our co-workers and, for all of you loyal Wedel's News readers and customers, it is pretty evident why. Simply - we get to work with great people. Every once in a while something special comes along and we have to crow a bit. Can't be helped.
Chuck Harmon
Chuck Harmon

We want to tell you about our friend, Chuck Harmon. Chuck is a retired chemistry teacher who has worked at Wedel's for a number of years. Chuck is also a runner. His most recent accomplishment is running in the North Country Trail Run in the Manistee National Forest. The trail run features a half marathon, full marathon and an ultra marathon.

The race is run on a single track, much like a bike path, but nothing like a paved bike path. The track winds and dips over a rough terrain of dirt, stones and exposed tree roots. (I thought "a walk in the woods" was meant to describe something casual and easy...). The North Country Trail Run was Chuck's first trail run and he completed the full marathon - that's 26.2 miles - in 7 hours and 24 minutes! (That exclamation point isn't for the time...it's for the "completed" part.)

Chuck said he took first place in his age group. Oh, and last place too. He was the only runner in the 70 to 99 year old group. The race was run 2 weeks ago today and Chuck says he feels great and is ready to go again. And he will go again. This time though to Detroit on October 21 for the Detroit Marathon.

Marathon running isn't a lonely sport. There were somewhere in the neighborhood of 300 to 400 runners in the North Country Trail Run, one of whom was Chuck's 23 year old son, Andy...who ran the ultra marathon...50 miles...in 10 hours and 16 minutes. We're proud of you, Chuck, and Andy too. We just had to let everyone know about it. Whew! It's break time. I've been sitting at this typewriter all day!

  Note from the Editor

September is here and soon the summer will pass and fall will be upon us. Even the most ardent gardener will have vague thoughts of stowing away the tools, locking the shed door and relaxing after a very challenging growing season. I hope all of your effort is being rewarded with a bountiful harvest of flowers, fruits and vegetables. But this isn't the time for rest. That time will be here soon enough.

Fall arrives on Saturday, September 22. The average first day of frost is around October 15 so we have time yet for more harvesting and more planting. As a matter of fact, we are arriving at the best time of year for planting. There's no better time to repair drought damaged lawns because fall typically brings rain and cooler weather which are excellent for seed germination and root development.

Fall weather is ideal for improving perennial gardens and landscaping. Planting this time of year allows trees and shrubs to get rooted in well before the stresses of next year's summer. The additions to your landscape can get acclimated to their new home now and can then expend their energy on growth during next summer.

There is much to be done during fall to finish this year's projects while preparing for next year. There is time now, when the weather can be more pleasant, to do the cleanup work that could be left for spring. However spring is often wetter and colder and some of the cleanup done now will prevent problems, such as disease, from over-wintering and causing additional work next year.

"By all these lovely tokens
September days are here,
With summer's best of weather
And autumn's best of cheer."
-  Helen Hunt Jackson, September, 1830-1885

September is the beginning of my favorite time of year and, whether it is your favorite, I hope it is the beginning of your best time of this year.

Ready for another trivia question? To what author has the line, "One bad apple spoils the bunch (or barrel)," been attributed? The first reader to respond with the correct answer will win a $15.00 Wedel's gift card. The gift card must be picked up here at the garden center and remember, you are eligible to win once every 90 days. Good luck and have fun!

'Til next time,
