A Thought
from the Garden
And Spring arose on the garden fair,
Like the Spirit of Love felt everywhere; And each flower and herb on Earth's dark breast rose from the dreams
of its wintry rest.

Word Of The Day At Wedel's - New!

Air pollution is something we often think about but air pollution inside our homes isn't something we often consider. Studies by the EPA indicate that indoor air pollution is one of the fastest growing environmental problems. How can that be? Here are some of the common sources of indoor air pollution: formaldehyde (carpeting, pressed wood, foam insulation), hydrocarbons (vinyl furniture, detergents, fabric softeners), benzene (glue, spot remover, paint) trichloroethylene (ink, paint, lacquer, adhesive) and the list goes on.
A NASA study suggests that we use one potted plant for every 100 square feet of floor space for pollution control. The best absorbers are: bamboo palm, dracaena, English ivy, golden pothos, philodendron, sansevieria, spathiphyllum and spider plant and, of course, Wedel's has all of these available for you in our floral department!
We also have brand new air plants such as bromeliads. They draw moisture from the air, grow with no soil, are easy to maintain and very impressive in appearance. If you are interested in year 'round indoor gardening take a look at our fairy gardens. Everything you need is in one place, Wedel's. We have new tools, new houses, new terrariums, new moss, new plants, new fairies, new party lights. Fairy gardens are another easy-to-maintain focal point that add a bit of whimsy and mystery to your landscape, indoors or out.
Wedel's new Boutique and Gift Center has something for everyone (including you!) including hats, purses, gloves, jewelry, shirts, scarves, bling. Laura Ashley is just now in stock! Stop by and see the new spring items like boots, umbrellas, kneelers, gloves and more. We also have new Sloggers boots, sandals and flip-flops.
A reminder for you, don't forget your birds. Just because there isn't a lot of snow that doesn't mean the birds can find food! We have a large stock of the freshest, cleanest seed available as well as suet and other favorites of your feathered friends.
March is an exciting, busy month at the garden center and I hope everyone stops by to see what's new at Wedel's. I'm looking forward to seeing all of our Wedel's friends at our Spring Expo, March 23 and 24!

Great White Trillium
Trillium grandiflorum
Trillium grandiflorum is the showiest of the trilliums and grows from an underground rhizome, which often lies horizontally under the ground. Mature plants have a single stem, a whorl of three leaves and a single large flower with three white petals. Flowers bloom for 2-3 weeks in the early spring (late April to mid-May), before forest canopy leaves appear, and are pollinated by bumblebees.
The spring-blooming flowers of white trillium (Trillium grandiflorum) start out white and fade to pink as the flowers age. The delightfully unusual flowers of wild White Trillium grandiflorum are a harbinger of spring, blooming in April and May and are found growing wild in the understory of rich deciduous or mixed coniferous-deciduous upland temperate forests of the Midwest and Eastern United States in moist shade in roadsides, floodplains, ravines, along bluffs, and along rocky slopes in woods. Great white goes dormant with the heat of summer.
These beautiful spring bloomers are always a wonderful sight that you will surely appreciate year after year. Click here for more information. Great White Trillium is a special order plant so if you'd like some for your landscape contact us for details.

Note from the Editor
"One swallow does not make a summer, but one skein of geese, cleaving the murk of March thaw, is the Spring." Aldo Leopold
It doesn't take much, this time of year, for us to grasp at every indication of winter's waning. A skein of geese, a day like we enjoyed this past Wednesday and we begin to experience that wonderful affliction, spring fever. Winter is too busy preparing to migrate south to pay too much attention to us but he hasn't left yet. There will be more snow, more ice, more gray but, when he isn't looking, sprigs of green will appear. Have you noticed? Our hummingbird friends have begun to make their way to shore along the Gulf of Mexico!
Spring will begin at 1:14 a.m. on March 20 and, as we know from experience, we could be knee deep in snow. BUT, no matter the weather, daffodils, tulips, trees and shrubs and much more will be in full bloom by March 23 at Wedel's! If we are knee deep in snow come on out and enjoy spring with us at Wede's Spring Expo on Friday and Saturday, March 23 and 24. And if we aren't knee deep in snow, even more reason to join us and all of the Wedel's green thumb friends for a weekend of spring sights, sounds and scents.
Since you are a Wedel's News subscriber I have to think you've attended your share of Expo events and programs and know what Expo is like. If, by chance, you haven't yet experienced Expo, just a few of the attractions we have in store for you are; a greenhouse full of spring (blooming plants of all kinds), exhibits, freebies, seminars (over 30 of them), door prizes, kids activities, delicious food and on and on.
I can guarantee you won't see "...the murk of March thaw..." anywhere at Wedel's. Bring your family (there's something for everyone), bring your friends. Plan to make a day of it...plan to make TWO days of it. Make Wedel's Spring Expo your beginning to another wonderful year of time in the garden and landscape and give us the chance to say "Hello!" to our gardening friends old and new.
Ready for another trivia question? What nation produces two thirds of the world's vanilla? The first reader to respond with the correct answer will win a $15.00 Wedel's gift certificate. The gift certificate must be picked up here at the garden center and remember, you are eligible to win once every 90 days. Good luck and have fun!
'Til next time,
Jim
ps If you'd like to track the migration of the hummingbirds returning to YOUR feeders go to www.hummingbirds.net and click on the migration map link near the top of the left-hand column. The traditional time to have your hummingbird feeders cleaned, filled and ready for your guests is April 15.
