 A Gold Medal

 A gold medal goes to...

Michael Ianni. Michael was the first to submit the correct answer to our January trivia question: "From what did the city of Novi get its name?" The correct answer is "No one knows!" There are several opinions, each as reasonable as the other, but there is no documentation definitively determining the source of the name according to the office of communications for the city of Novi.

Michael won a $15.00 Wedel's gift certificate and you could too! Just be the first to respond with the correct answer to our monthly trivia question.

Congratulations, Michael!!

Winter

It lifts existence
on a plane of snow
One level higher
than the earth below,
One level nearer
heaven overhead,
And last year's berries
shining scarlet red.

Near You, Andy Wedel
Beginning soon, you will be hearing from Andy Wedel. Don't worry! Andy's father, George, is fine and isn't going anywhere. As a matter of fact, he might drop by in this column from time to time but he is focusing all of his time ensuring that the best products, the best information and the best customer service are here at Wedel's for all of you, his green-thumb friends.

One time, years ago, I asked George if he goes south or west for the winter. He just laughed and said that he doesn't because there's no better weather anywhere than right here in Michigan. He enjoys all of the seasons and is fascinated by what nature has in store during each of those seasons.

As much as we love having George here everyday we'd like to see him spend more time fishing, going to Tiger baseball games and enjoying his favorite past-time, gardening. But that isn't what he chooses to do. He is dedicated to providing the best gardening experiences for all of the rest of us so that's what he is going to do.

Andy will take on the added responsibility of providing the information and news you can use so, if there are topics you'd like to have him address, let us know!

Bailey Red-Twig Dogwood

Cornus baileyi

9 to 9 bannerIf you want to add brilliant color to an otherwise black and white winter landscape consider Bailey Red-Twig Dogwood. Blazing red stems against a backdrop of winter white will draw your attention to this beautiful shrub. The Red-Twig Dogwood has dark green leaves turning to red or orange in autumn and  small white flowers that appear in clusters up to 2" across in late spring, followed by white fruit.

9 to 9 bannerThis shrub is effective in natural plantings in moist soils where plants are allowed to spread and form thickets. It is effective also as property line screens. Plants perform very well in wet locations along streams or ponds where spreading roots help combat soil erosion.

A Grand, Old Company

"The Burpee company was founded in Philadelphia in 1876 by an 18 year-old with a passion for plants and animals and a mother willing to lend him $1000 dollars of "seed money" to get started in business. Within 25 years he had developed the largest, most progressive seed company in America.

Through good times and bad, great depression and world wars, Burpee has been a beacon of hope for Americans for over a century. Despite the invention of the radio, television, cell phone and Ipods, nothing is more amazing and powerful than the enchantment of planting a seed in soil and watching it grow. We, at Burpee, certainly did not invent it, but we have been dedicated to enabling you to share, in a very small but significant way, in the astonishing magic of nature."

Of course, the finest selection of Burpee seeds can be found at Wedel's. Wedel's is where you go when you want the very best; the very best seeds and the very best information that assure you success in your flower or vegetable garden. Speaking of information, Burpee, though an old company, is keeping up with technology. You'll find a QR (quick response) code printed on each of the seed packets. Simply scan the code with your smart phone and you have immediate access to all sorts of information about the seeds in the packet you're holding.

When you want quality, whether gorgeous flowers or nutritious food, think of Burpee...plant Burpee seeds and participate "in the astonishing magic of nature."

  Note from the Editor

Happy February, all!

Punxsutawney Phil saw his shadow yesterday so that means 6 more weeks of winter...or should I say six weeks of winter. The weather has been very mild so far this season but there's still plenty of time for some good, old-fashioned winter weather. (I remember wearing a sweatshirt on Memorial Day not too long ago.)

Phil isn't really a reliable forecaster of the season but I'll tell you what is; Wedel's. As you know, it takes us a while to make changes from one season to another and we've been busy doing just that at the garden center. Seed displays arrived and were set up last month. If you haven't yet, you really should see them. I guess it doesn't matter how many times it has happened; every time I walk onto the sales floor in January and see the first of the displays set up I know spring is swiftly approaching. Well, there are lots of seed racks up and everyone has images of warmer, more colorful days that are soon to be here.

Everyone is busily planning and doing, getting ready for one of the most exciting times of the year when we get back outside working in and enjoying our landscapes. As usual, we will have your favorite tried-and-true products and some exciting new things we are bringing in with you in mind. We have a new seed company represented this year called Seed Saver's Exchange. Seed Saver's Exchange involves "participatory preservation." As they state it, "Seed Savers Exchange has been promoting the preservation and utilization of heirloom varieties for 36 years. Working with our members--farmers and gardeners--to ensure that these unique varieties are not lost forever, SSE encourages 'participatory preservation' through membership in the Seed Savers Exchange.

Of course, we have our traditional supplies of seed too. Here's a list of the companies we represent:  Seed Saver's Exchange, Burpee, Olds, Renee's Garden, Botanical Interests, Livingston, Ferry Morse and Hart. For the really green green-thumbers we have, from the Triumph Plant Company, Crayola - My First Garden gardening kits for kids! Here's a way to begin a family tradition with your little ones. They'll feel all grown up when they're working beside you in the garden, learning all about the miracle of nature when they watch their very own delicious veggies and pretty flowers growing day-by-day.

This is a wonderful time of year no matter if the weather stays mild and quiet or decides to become cold, icy and ferocious. Whatever the weather, spring is springing at Wedel's and we'd love to share it with you. As always, we enjoy seeing our old friends and making new ones. Stop by if for nothing else than to say, "hi!"

Ready for another trivia question? There is a nontraditional, organic, layering method of gardening you can use to create better soil while keeping your gardens neat and attractive. What is this method of gardening commonly called? The first reader to respond with the correct answer will win a $15.00 Wedel's gift certificate. The gift certificate must be picked up here at the garden center and remember, you are eligible to win once every 90 days. Good luck and have fun!

'Til next time,

Jim
