Late Blight on Tomatoes
Late Blight
Although true, this headline should not be a cause of alarm. Recently published information stated that the fungus responsible for late blight has made an appearance in our area however we have not seen that specific disease here at Wedel's Garden Center. Our concerned and conscientious customers have brought in examples of fungal infections on various vegetable and ornamental plants asking for the most responsible plan of action. The infections we have seen do not require you to remove the ailing plants as well as those surrounding it. Repeat applications of Fertilome Garden Fungicide will halt the progress of the fungus and allow you to get a maximum harvest from your vegetable garden.

The best offense is a good defense so mulching your plants with a hard wood mulch will go a long way in preventing many fungal problems. Water droplets, either from rain or overhead watering, will cause water to splash on the lower leaves of the plants. Soil borne fungus is then given the opportunity to infect those leaves and continue to attack the entire plant. A spray program using Fertilome Garden Fungicide, when begun before signs of distress appear, will help to prevent infection by either soil or air borne fungi.

Your best initial step is to bring in a sample of the ailing plant for a diagnosis and a step-by-step plan of attack. If you have any questions or concerns, we're here to help you. Just talk with any of the gardening experts here at Wedel's Garden Center.

Occasionally we publish an Extra Edition of Wedel's News. If there is something we learn of that you should know or we think you would appreciate hearing about, you will receive a special copy of the newsletter.

Quite a bit about late blight has been in the media recently and while it is something to be aware of, there is no reason to panic. Keep a vigilant watch on your gardens and, if you see a problem beginning, come to Wedel's. Better yet, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure, as the saying goes so consider acting before you begin to see problems. Come on by and we'll lend a hand whether you want to prevent or cure garden diseases. (The same is true concerning your lawn maintenance, too!)

'Til next time...
