They're Back!
Ok, Sorta Back
by Roger Taylor

The hummers have started coming across the Gulf of Mexico. So they're back in the USA but not back, back. I'm sorry because their arrival is exciting to me because it is my first real sign that spring is on the way.

Their migration is like clock work, ALWAYS before the first of March. It's nice to know there is something you can depend on these days. The map is updated multiple times each day so you can literally watch spring move toward us even while it's still snowing here. Keep in mind that to be plotted on the map it takes both a bird and someone who reports to Hummingbirds.net being in the same place at the same time and only the earliest sightings are recorded. The bulk of the birds are well behind. This means even when you see a sighting in Kalamazoo don't panic that you don't have a hummer, your bird may be bringing up the rear.

Use the map to help determine when to start your feeder. When you see a report in Northern Indiana putting out your feeder may very well get you an early bird.

Occasionally we publish an Extra Edition of Wedel's News. If there is something we learn of that you should know or we think you would appreciate hearing about, you will receive a special copy of the newsletter.

It is unusual for us to come to you with an Extra Edition this close to our regular publication date which is this Friday, March 5, but there shouldn't be any restrictions on good news, right?  And good news it is. By this time of year I'm ready for any sign of spring, small though it may be and I'm pretty sure you are too.

Roger Taylor contacted me this weekend with some wonderful news! Our hummingbirds have come ashore on the Gulf of Mexico. He gave a link to you so you can track their migration right to our feeders. Visit that link often and watch as spring comes home!

'Til next time...
