What's
Next? |
 |
So...now what? You've chosen the perfect spot in your landscaping for a new tree. What do you do next? Come in to Wedel's and we'll help you, step-by-step, through the entire process from choosing the right tree for that perfect spot through site preparation, planting and beyond to ensure your investment is there for generations to come.
When you come in, bring a soil sample from the planting area. A cupful or so from 10 to 12 inches down will work just fine. We will check the pH and take a look at the structure of the sample and, if any amendments are needed, we will give you all of the details.
Make this a family project! Bring the kids along and let them help choose a tree, plant it and care for it. It will be one of those projects that become a life-long memory. |

Why Celebrate
Arbor Week?
by George Wedel |
More than 130 years after its founding, Arbor Week is as steadfast as an oak. Founded by J. Sterling Morton (i.e., Morton Salt) Arbor Week has encouraged thousands of environmentally concerned citizens to plant trees every year. Planting trees is efficient use of our time - plant them once and enjoy them for years, both you and your grandchildren...and their grandchildren. What a legacy!
Tree facts: In one year a tree can produce enough oxygen for a family of four. Trees reduce carbon dioxide. Trees are beautiful. Trees reduce noise pollution. Trees provide food and shelter for wildlife. Trees reduce soil erosion. Trees provide cooling shade. Trees help reduce home heating and cooling cost. Trees make great wind breaks.
Planting a tree is an act of optimism and kindness, a labor of love and a commitment to stewardship. Plant a tree today!

The following is from the WMU News.
"March 4, 2009
KALAMAZOO--The National Arbor Day Foundation announced in January that Western Michigan University has been named the 12th Tree Campus USA institution in the nation and second such campus in Michigan.
The designation recognizes WMU for its dedication to campus forestry management and environmental stewardship. The honor, which was given to the University of Michigan in fall 2008, is similar to the Arbor Day Foundation's Tree City USA program. Both Kalamazoo and Portage, Mich., number among the nation's more than 3,300 Tree Cities."
Congratulations to Western Michigan University and the cities of Kalamazoo and Portage! 'Til next time...
He that planteth a tree is a servant of God, he provideth a kindness for many generations, and faces that he hath not seen shall bless him. - Henry Van Dyke | |
