Some Hummers Are Back...Maybe Yours? |
Birds are always surprising us. The first surprise this year is the hummingbirds. 2009 has the earliest first bird that I've ever seen. There are already several reports in Michigan and Wisconsin and we're barely into April. To my knowledge the earliest reported sighting in Michigan is March 28th so this is truly an early year.
First the good news, the cold snowy weather predicted for the next few days should not have a negative impact on these early birds. As long as temperatures don't go below 20 degrees the hummers should be alright. In the absence of feeders being available hummers use the holes made by Yellow-bellied Sapsuckers and take tree sap in place of nectar. That being said this would be a great time to start your hummingbird feeder. If you are lucky enough to have one of these exceptional birds they certainly would benefit from having a feeder available.
Now the bad news, even though there are several reports of these early birds there are still relatively few birds here this early. Don't be disappointed if your bird is not one of the earliest. It's just if you like hummers as much as I do you don't want to miss a chance to start watching them. The other thing is the feeders would be extremely beneficial to the birds that got here just in time for the last (hopefully) snow of the year.
One last thing, anybody who has listened to Birdwatch knows I think Aspects hummingbird feeders are by far the best on the market. They have a lifetime warranty, a built in ant trap (moat), they allow the birds to perch when eating and this is the ONLY feeder that is dishwasher safe. (I'm not lazy I'm an efficiency expert.) Perhaps one of the best attributes is Aspects feeders is they are all manufactured in the United States! Don't overlook the free nectar offer in the coupon below. That's all for now I've got to go fill my feeder.
