The Great Backyard Bird Count Starts Tomorrow
The twelfth annual Great Backyard Bird Count (GBBC) begins tomorrow. Plan to join tens of thousands of other bird watchers across North America as we count the birds over the next four days. Count on your own or with family, friends, and neighbors to make this the biggest, best GBBC ever!  If you know someone who might be interested in joining the GBBC for the first time, please pass along the website: www.birdcount.org ! If they do not have access to the internet, Wedel's would be happy to assist with the data entry. Just tell them to bring their count to the store.

We have an opportunity to gather real time to help us understand where the birds are and how their populations are changing over time. Last year, participants counted over nine million birds and reported 12 species never before reported during the GBBC! Let's see how many we can count this year, and find out together how bird populations may be changing.

Southwest Michigan, for many years, has played a role in this citizen-science effort. To the left you will find how submissions from Kalamazoo and Portage compared to other Michigan cities. Let's make sure our region is well represented this year.

It's easy to participate. Just go to the web site below to learn the three easy steps!

What's an outdoor activity you can do from the comfort of your easy chair or breakfast table? Roger has the answer above. Ok, it might not really be an outdoor activity but it is a chance to enjoy the out-of-doors while staying nice and warm with a cup of coffee or hot chocolate. For the more intrepid among us it is an outdoor activity and you'll be doing a good deed at the same time! Sounds like a winning (and relaxing) situation to me...

'Til next time...
