General Care
Information
Hydrangeas have a moderate to high water requirement. Plants flag (wilt) when temperatures rise and the soil becomes dry. Newly planted Hydrangeas may need water every couple days during the first growing season to keep the plants form wilting. Once established Hydrangeas require at least 1" of water per week during the growing season.
Placing the plant in a lightly shaded area and mulching the roots will help reduce the water needs for your plants.
Water occasionally throughout the fall and winter, especially before a hard freeze. A 3-4" layer of organic mulch is recommended year round to reduce weeds, conserve moisture, and protect the roots during the cold weather. |
| Give Your New Clematis a Happy Home
Clematis like cool roots and a warm top. Consider planting small evergreens around the base to help keep the soil cool and moist. Clematis also like a sweet, well-drained soil. An eastern exposure is ideal.
While we're discussing happy homes, you can see from the above information about hydrangeas, they have preferences also. To ensure success with either your new hydrangea or clematis, bring a soil sample into Wedel's for a free soil analysis. A coffee can full is ample. Note from the Editor
This is an exciting time at Wedel's Nursery, Florist and Garden Center. As the song says, "Spring's bustin' out all over!" Color and fragrance are everywhere from our parking lot to our floral department to annuals and perennials to the nursery. If your mom likes beautiful color, it's here. If she enjoys wonderful scents, they're here. If she enjoys working in the soil to produce beautiful color and wonderful scents, we have everything she needs to enjoy the satisfaction of sitting in a lawn chair, on a cool summer evening, with a glass of iced tea and being able to say, "I planted that!"
