New Information: Cord Stem Cells ~ Adult CPR~
Cord Stem Cells ~ On the Today Show on March 11, 2008, Dallas Hextell, a toddler diagnosed with cerebral palsy at 8 months of age, is now showing fewer signs of the disorder and marked improvement after an infusion of his own stem cells-made possible by the preservation of his own cord blood shortly after birth (click on his photo to go to the Today Show clip). Way to go stem cells!
Adult CPR ~ In a major change, the American Heart Association said on March 31, 2008, that skipping the mouth-to-mouth and giving hands-only CPR - rapid, deep presses on the victim's chest until help arrives - works just as well as standard CPR for sudden cardiac arrest in adults. Experts are hoping that bystanders will now be more willing to help if they see someone collapse. Hands-only CPR is simpler, easier to remember, and removes a big barrier for those hesitant about the mouth-to-mouth breathing. |

Car Safety for Children
A huge victory for children in and around motor vehicles. President Bush signed the Cameron Gulbransen Kids Transportation Safety Act into law on February 28, 2008. The law was named after 2-year-old Cameron Gulbransen who was killed when he was inadvertently backed over by an SUV because the blindzone behind the vehicle made it impossible to see him. Since 2000, over 1,375 children have died in non-traffic incidents. Back-over incidents have increased dramatically, claiming the lives of 474 children from 2002-2006 compared to 128 from 1997-2001. Backovers now account for half of all non-traffic fatalities involving children. The legislation directs the U.S. Department of Transportation to issue new safety standards within specific periods that will lead to the installation of safety technologies as standard equipment in all vehicles to prevent deaths and injuries in and around motor vehicles. These safety technologies are already available as standard equipment, upgrades or optional equipment in many makes and models of vehicles.
*PLEASE SIGN UP FOR CAR SAFETY FOR CHILDREN CLASS! I cannot stress how important it is to learn as much as possible about the newborn car seat...but of equal importance are the 4-8 year old's safety. Dear readers, we are not doing well with this group of children and their booster seats. The workshop is only 3-4 hours, inexpensive...and EXTREMELY IMPORTANT to your children. PLEASE...come spend a few more hours with me! Bring a friend, neighbor, family member. Are you in charge of others' children? Do you carpool and drive other people's children? Please...if not for yourself, do it for them! Please come to class!
*Car Seat Safety Checkpoint Site Update---Gunther Volkswagen on 441 no longer checks car seats.

PLAYGROUP/SUPPORT/SOCIALIZING MOMS IN BOCA RATON AREA WANTED: *Attention Moms with Babies: One local mom Catherine S. would like to start a group for moms. Not necessarily a "play" group...but a group for new stay at home moms who need to shake the "baby blues" or are just looking to get out of the house and talk with other new moms. Possibly start as a chat group, social hour, lunch date, stroller-exercise walks in the mall, picnic at the park, out of the house things...and maybe in the house once in awhile. Catherine is very excited about starting a group in this area. If you are interested, please contact Catherine S. via email at ccsocci@hotmail.com If the group develops, please let me know so I can help it grow! Good Luck!
ANYONE KNOW... ? You asked if anyone knew of any support groups or group activities in Naples...anyone know?
? Anyone know of a single young mom, maybe teenager, who could use labor support and would love it but cannot afford it? Maybe she would like to take a childbirth class but cannot afford it. Maybe she doesn't have much emotional/financial support and is feeling scared or alone. If you know someone that might fit this profile...can you please call or email me? Many thanks, Diane 561.302.1919 or Diane@PersonalChildbirthTrainer.com
