"From Pregnancy to Labor and Delivery
& Beyond..."
April 2008
Hello Everyone!

Diane Ellen
Welcome to the April 2008
e-newsletter!

Wow!  What a response to last month's newsletter!  I was amazed at how many of you emailed me back to say "hi".

Another neat thing that resulted was that some of you are looking to help or get help from other readers!  Some of you wrote that you had the name of a nanny or some interesting tidbit that you wanted to share with other moms and dads.  Some of you wrote asking me to ask the readers for suggestions or help.  So this newsletter will have more ways for you to connect with one another.  So...I am more than happy to be of help!  If we can help one another...what a great thing!

Happy Spring everyone!  Talk to you again next month!

~Diane

cpr teddy Infant CPR-
Introducing...
CPR TEDDY!

This is my newest favorite item!  Recently, I began teaching Private Infant CPR in people's homes.  It occurred to me that very often, after one takes a CPR class, they forget much of what they learned.  It is difficult when you don't have a "CPR Annie" doll at your home to practice on.  So...I searched to web for teaching tools.  Things that will help you practice CPR long after I leave your home.  I do not want to come to your home, teach you, and then leave you empty handed.  What if you want to practice again the next week or month?  It isn't realistic to have a CPR Instructor come to your home each month to practice with you. Thus...CPR Teddy

CPR Teddy is so darn cute!  He is a soft, gentle, endearing toy with a purpose.  He can sit up on a shelf in your baby's room as a reminder to practice your choking rescue and CPR skills.  When you squeeze his paws you can practice either Infant or Child CPR.  CPR Teddy includes a DVD on Infant/Child CPR, choking rescue, first aid, and tips for childproofing your home & car.  There is a bright red heart to indicate where to compress the chest.  A red and green light indicates if you are compressing the chest too hard, too soft, or just right.  A metronome paces your compressions and a disposable mask and air bag lets you practice giving rescue breaths.

CPR Teddy is a great gift for parents, grandparents, and babysitters!  Children enjoy learning about CPR on CPR Teddy!  Use CPR Teddy to review your babysitter's skills before going out.  So, I recommend that all child care providers take a complete CPR course for Infants taught by a certified instructor.  CPR Teddy is intended to assist in practicing skills already acquired.

Purchasing information is in the column to the left.
Can you tell I love CPR Teddy???!!!  :^)

Logo Car Seat Safety Car Safety for Children

Okay...we all remember that the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) recommends that  for optimal protection, use the rear-facing carseat to highest weight or height according to the carseat instructions.  AT A MINIMUM, use rear-facing carseat until child is at least 1 YEAR OLD AND AT LEAST 20 POUNDS!  Most newer convertible seats are approved for rear-facing use up to 30-35 pounds and should be considered for infants whose height or weight have exceeded the limits of the rear-facing infant-only seat.

Regarding comfort, practical experience has shown that active infants can tolerate riding with their legs folded.  Parents with children whose feet touch the vehicle seat should be told about the possible trade-offs, ie. head and spine injuries vs. possible injury to the lower extremities.

One of you recently called asking "why Diane, why can't I turn him around yet?".  If the above isn't enough, please go on this video on You Tube which I think shows "why?" really well!
