Volunteer Spotlight
|
As Girls on the Run St. Louis celebrates 10 years of empowering more than 10,000 girls for a lifetime of healthy living, we celebrate the amazing volunteers whose commitment and passion change the lives of thousands of girls throughout the St. Louis region each year. Meet one of our superstar volunteers: Nila Gorman. Nila is a teacher and Girls on Track coach at Hazelwood Southeast Middle School. It was her principal who first encouraged her to form a Girls on Track team at the school in 2011. Nila is also an avid runner, completing eight half marathons and she says coaching GOT inspires her to keep on running. In addition to running, teaching, and coaching, Nila works with WISE, Women's Initiatives that Strengthen and Empower, in Zambia, Africa. Nila also taught ninth grade English at Sishekanu Basic School in Kaoma, Zambia. While her class was a great success, Nila says she still feels she is called to do more and currently sponsors two boys in Kaoma. Nila explains her passion for teaching and coaching: "I truly believe we are put on this earth for two reasons: to serve others and to grow. Teaching and coaching has given me so many opportunities to grow and learn. I'm thankful for the journey I've experienced, the path I am currently on, and what the future has in store." GOTR St. Louis Turns 10!
|

Girls on the Run St. Louis is celebrating 10 years helping more than 10,000 girls in third through eighth grade in the St. Louis Metropolitan area improve their self-esteem through a unique character development program that combines life skills lessons with training for a 5k! That's impressive, considering the program began on a Clayton park bench in 2002 with just 20 girls.
We plan to spend three seasons (Spring 2012, Fall 2012 and Spring 2013):
- Celebrating the 10-year anniversary;
- Reconnecting with alumni of the program and their families;
- Raising awareness of the value of the Girls on the Run St. Louis program
Pencil in these upcoming events:
October 24, 2012: Health symposium at Washington University in St. Louis
November 17, 2012: Girls on the Run St. Louis 5k race downtown St. Louis
Spring 2013: Grand finale event
Keep an eye on our website, Facebook, Twitter, and this spot for upcoming announcements about our birthday party and how you can celebrate with us!

Interested in Starting a New GOTR Site?
|
| | Deadline for New Site Applications is November 1
In order to manage the fantastic growth our organization has been experiencing, we are already planning for the spring 2013 season. Click here to learn more about starting a Girls on the Run or Girls on Track team at your school. A "Setting Up a Site" informational packet and a "Site Application" are available to download. All site applications must be turned in by November 1 to be considered as a potential site this spring. While starting and "running" a Girls on the Run team is a time intensive volunteer endeavor, the rewards are immeasurable!

5k Superstars
|
| | Add extra meaning to your November!
Superstar: noun - person who uses his or her talent and motivation to inspire the community and help raise up individuals to achieve their dreams (YOU!)
5k Superstars are men and women who will run the Girls on the Run 5k on November 17, 2012 in support of the Girls on the Run St. Louis scholarship program.
Whether you are running the 5k as a family member, practice partner or community participant, you can help spread the word and raise money for scholarships benefitting Girls on the Run St. Louis.
Each 5k Superstar receives a personal fundraising page but has no fundraising minimum. Runners that raise $100 or more by race day will receive a Girls on the Run technical running shirt. All funds raised benefit the Girls on the Run St. Louis scholarship fund.
Last year our 5k Superstars raised more than $2,700 for our scholarship fund. Help us beat our goal of $3,000 this year!
Our philosophy is to never turn a girl away who wants to participate in our program and cannot afford it. GOTR-STL offers full and partial scholarships to all participants who are unable to afford the program. The scholarship program is critical to our ability to carry out the GOTR-STL mission. We distributed more than $255,000 in scholarships during the 2011-2012 school-year. During the 2012-2013 school-year, we anticipate distributing more than $290,000 in scholarships to girls in the program with your help.
Consider being a superstar to a special girl in our program! Click here to register to be a 5k Superstar. Contact Katy Sommer for more information.

GOTR's Shoe Program Helps Level the Playing Field
|
| |
Giving each girl the same start is part of the GOTR mission
"I feel like I'm floating!" said a participant when she put on a new pair of shoes this season, courtesy of Girls on the Run, to replace an old pair of too-small shoes. In an effort to level the playing field for all of our Girls on the Run and Girls on Track participants, we try to ensure that each girl is wearing the same shirt and they all have running shoes on race day. We are grateful to New Balance and Big River Running Co., for helping us provide more than 130 pairs of shoes to girls this season.
Wish List: Would you also like to help a girl make a run for the finish line? $40 will provide a pair of running shoes to a girl next season. Donate online here.
