Volunteer Spotlight
As Girls on the Run St. Louis celebrates 10 years of empowering more than 10,000 girls for a lifetime of healthy living, we celebrate the amazing volunteers whose commitment and passion change the lives of thousands of girls throughout the St. Louis region each year.

GOTR is proud to share that Carrie Probst, Treasurer of the Board of Directors of GOTR and GOTR Coach, was nominated for a Town & Style Reaching Out Award! The award honors the important contributions made by volunteers to nonprofits in the St. Louis community. Carrie Probst and family

A CPA by trade, Carrie first learned about GOTR in 2008 through a client. Inspired by the mission and the program, as well as energized that it met her interests and skills, Carrie joined the Board of Directors in 2008. Carrie supported and furthered the mission through the development of formalized accounting procedures and the assistance of financial reports. As a Board member of four years, Carrie has donated countless hours of her professional skills in building the infrastructure of GOTR.

Carrie brought the program to her daughter's school, Christ, Prince of Peace School in Manchester although her daughter was too young for the program.

Her family is welcoming another Girl on the Run to the clan this October so she is retiring from the Board of Directors after two terms. She still plans on coaching this spring and has set her sights on running the Go! St. Louis Half Marathon.

Here's what Carrie had to say in her own words ...

What is the most rewarding thing about Girls on the Run? Last spring was our first season at Christ, Prince of Peace School and the response to the program was amazing. We fielded two full teams last year and kicked off Girls on Track this fall. What was especially rewarding was how quickly the school community embraced us because of the stellar reputation of the program. The administration, faculty and students supported our community service bake sale and allowed us to use school facilities however we needed.

Favorite memory: At our second to last practice, one of my girls who was a reluctant runner who chose to walk many of our practice laps came to me and said, "I am going to run the entire 5K because now I believe that I can do it. I am athletic and strong and I promise you I will not stop."

Why would you recommend others get involved with Girls on the Run?

For girls, GOTR is low risk but high reward. Everyone is accepted no matter what your athletic ability or prior experiences. As a volunteer, you help shape the characters of our future generations and watch your girls evolve from tentative participants into community minded and confident leaders.

Turns 10!

10 year logo

Girls on the Run St. Louis is celebrating 10 years helping more than 10,000 girls in third through eighth grade in the St. Louis metropolitan area improve their self-esteem through a unique character development program that combines life skills lessons with training for a 5k! That's impressive, considering the program began on a Clayton park bench in 2002 with just 20 girls.

We plan to spend three seasons (Spring 2012, Fall 2012 and Spring 2013):

  • Celebrating the 10-year anniversary;
  • Reconnecting with alumni of the program and their families;
  • Raising awareness of the value of the Girls on the Run St. Louis program

Ready, Set, Go!

Girls on the Run practices start this week

This week marks the start of Girls on the Run and Girls on Track practices across the St. Louis region! The girls are beginning their 10-week journey that incorporates training for a 5k as a means to teach essential life skills.

Each of the 20 lessons in the researched-based curriculum stresses the importance of developing the emotional, mental, social and physical parts of the individual to create a well-balanced, healthy person.

The lessons are designed to encourage independent thinking, problem solving, as well as team and community building. The program culminates with a 5k event, which provides the opportunity for the girls to achieve their goal and celebrate their accomplishment.

Here is a look at the Fall 2012 season by the numbers:
  • More than 2,200 girls have registered for the program
  • More than 700 coaches will inspire the girls each day at practice
  • 110 sites, mostly schools, are hosting teams

5k Superstars

Add extra meaning to your November!

Superstar: noun - person who uses his or her talent and motivation to inspire the community and help raise up individuals to achieve their dreams (YOU!)

5k Superstars are men and women who will run the Girls on the Run 5k on November 17, 2012 in support of the Girls on the Run St. Louis scholarship program.

Whether you are running the 5k as a family member, practice partner or community participant, you can help spread the word and raise money for scholarships benefitting Girls on the Run St. Louis.

Each 5k Superstar receives a personal fundraising page but has no fundraising minimum. Runners that raise $100 or more by race day will receive a Girls on the Run technical running shirt. All funds raised benefit the Girls on the Run St. Louis scholarship fund.

Last year our 5k Superstars raised more than $2,700 for our scholarship fund. Help us beat our goal of $3,000 this year!

5k Superstar

Our philosophy is to never turn a girl away who wants to participate in our program and cannot afford it. GOTR-STL offers full and partial scholarships to all participants who are unable to afford the program. The scholarship program is critical to our ability to carry out the GOTR-STL mission. We distributed more than $255,000 in scholarships during the 2011-2012 school-year. During the 2012-2013 school-year, we anticipate distributing more than $290,000 in scholarships to girls in the program with your help.

Consider being a superstar to a special girl in our program! Click here to register to be a 5k Superstar. Contact Katy Sommer for more information.

New PSA helps highlight GOTR in the community

Girls on the Run St. Louis is excited to share our new public service announcement with all of you! We have been so fortunate to have FOX Sports Midwest as a Media Partner for the Spring 2012 and Fall 2012 seasons. One of the many ways they have supported us through the year is by donating the creation and air time of countless promos of our races in an effort to help us spread the word about GOTR-STL to the Greater St. Louis community.

This summer the team at FOX Sports Midwest worked with us to create an inspiring PSA that helps explain why Girls on the Run is so important in the community. The generosity of their time and production has allowed us to reach so many new girls, parents, and supporters. Keep an eye out for the PSA during Cardinals games or check it out on our YouTube channel.

Girls on the Run St. Louis Grows Again

gotr stl logo

Girls on the Run St. Louis is happy to welcome our new program administrator, Colleen Shaughnessy! Colleen serves as the first point of contact our coaches have when contacting the office and supports our program staff.

She learned about the program during her time as a social work intern in the Parkway School District. Colleen witnessed several girls emerge as confident leaders after participating in the Girls on the Run program and 5k race and was excited for the opportunity to join the team.

Colleen received a Masters in Social Work from Saint Louis University in August of 2012. She is a proud St. Louis native where she ran CYC track for St. Peter in Kirkwood and cross country for Kirkwood High School.  Colleen completed her first full marathon in 2010 and plans to be a lifelong runner.  She is a member of August Gate Church in the Tower Grove East neighborhood where she serves with the children's ministry.

Thanks again for your support. We can't run without you!

Sincerely,
Girls on the Run St. Louis Staff
