GOTR is Green!
Girls on the Run St. Louis partnered with St. Louis Earth Day to decrease the environmental impact of this spring's 5k.

With the help of dedicated volunteers and race participants, we collected 12 cubic yards of recyclables and 1 cubic yard of compost. With only 3.75 cubic yards of landfill waste produced, 78% of the total total waste collected will be recycled or composted! The spring 2012 GOTR 5k increased volume diversion by an average of 9% from the 2011 events!

A huge thank you to St. Louis Earth Day and especially to Bill Parmentier and race committee member Molly James who worked long and hard to ensure our efforts to go green were the best ever!

Capes Were Flapping, Confidence Was Soaring!

Girls on the Run superheroes took to the streets of downtown St. Louis

More than 5,500 superheroes crossed the finish line of the Girls on the Run 5k on Saturday, May 12 many with capes flapping in the wind behind them as they ran.

The largest Girls on the Run 5k in St. Louis

to date was a smashing success with approximately 10,000 people gathering downtown in the new race location to run, cheer and support the nearly 2,600 girls in the Girls on the Run program this spring in 126 schools across the metropolitan area.

The weather was beautiful, but the smiles and sense of pride exuding from the finishers was even more beautiful. We hope that our runners come away from the race with the feeling that if they can run a 5k, they can do anything!

Ducks took to the streets of downtown

Duck race raises important funds for Girls on the Run St. Louis scholarships

The fourth annual duck race presented by the Girls on the Run St. Louis Junior Board was a great success! Approximately $30,000 was raised for the GOTR scholarship fund, allowing us to ensure any girl can participate in the program, regardless of ability to pay. In the 2012-2013 school-year, we anticipate awarding more than $300,000 in scholarships. Your duck ticket purchase helped us reach our goal. Thank you!

With the help of the superheroes from the St. Louis Fire Department Engine 2 and the FOX Sports Midwest Girls, thousands of rubber ducks "raced" down Chestnut Street on Saturday morning after the 5k. Three ducks won cash prizes. Congratulations to the following winners!

1st place ($1,500) - Jen Nord, Fairway Elementary

2nd place ($1,000) - Jimmy Smith, Shiloh School

3rd place ($500) - Marge Burns, Sorrento Springs

We want to extend a big thanks to the following superheroes that helped the ducks "migrate" from Pagoda Circle in Forest Park to their new course in downtown St. Louis!

Girls on the Run St. Louis Gives Back

Winners of the Koman Award for Excellence in Community Service Announced

Part of the Girls on the Run curriculum entails each team conducting a community service project. Girls on the Run St. Louis honors our teams' hard work and creativity through the Koman Award for Excellence in Community Service. We had a record number of entries this season! It's so inspiring to see all of the amazing projects that have happened throughout the St. Louis metro area. We are pleased to announce the winners!

The first place winner is Shiloh Village Elementary School in Shiloh, IL. The team from Shiloh collected food and non-perishable items for the tornado victims in Harrisburg, IL. Mrs. Brooke Sterns, an assistant coach at Shiloh, is originally from Harrisburg and her parents and extended family experienced some devastation from the tornado. With the help from Mrs. Richter & Mrs. Storll and some fabulous volunteers, the team organized the "Stuff the Truck for Harrisburg" event at Schnucks in O'Fallon, IL. The girls created a "shopping list" of items that the residents of Harrisburg needed and handed them to every shopper that came in the doors. Many people purchased extra items for the tornado victims and received a hand written thank you note from the girls. They were able to fill an entire trailer! After a two hour trek to Harrisburg, the coaches were able to deliver the items to an emergency relief shelter. They were so grateful! Congratulations on a job well done to all of the volunteers and Girls on the Run participants at Shiloh Village Elementary School.

We had a tie for second place! Congratulations to the teams from Renfro Elementary in Collinsville, IL and Edgar Murray Elementary in St. Clair, MO.

The team from Renfro organized a project called "Making Tracks for Cameron." Cameron is a boy in their community who was critically injured recently while being attacked by a dog. The GOTR team organized a fundraiser to help his family with medical expenses incurred after the accident. The girls preformed a skit at school about their project in an effort to engage all of the students. They asked students to donate $1 to have the opportunity to run a mile around the school track during recess. The GOTR team cheered them on as they ran. More than 300 children in the school ran a mile! They were able to donate $384.06 to Cameron's family. Way to go Renfro GOTR girls and coaches!

The Edgar Murray team organized "A Night of Family Fitness & Fun Sponsored by Girls on the Run." The GOTR team and their coaches planned an evening to show how fitness can not only be healthy but fun too! They also tied in supporting a local food pantry by asking the participants to each bring canned goods to the event. Each family or group would spend 15 minutes performing each of the following activities: Zumba, PX90, Wii Fitness, relay races, and a mock GOTR practice. All activities were led by GOTR participants and coaches. The families in attendance had a blast! Way to go Edgar Murray GOTR team!

Edgar Murray Community Service

The third place winner is the team from St. Justin Martyr in Sunset Hills, MO. They chose "Angel's Arms" as the beneficiary of their community service project. The GOTR team and coaches decided to make an Angel's Arms' foster home beautiful by raising money to buy flowers and landscaping supplies. They prepared beds, weeded and planted flowers. Way to go St. Justin Martyr GOTR!

Honorable Mentions were awarded to the following teams:
*Caseyville Elementary

*Flynn Park Elementary

*Freeburg Elementary
*George Guffey Elementary

*Gotsch Intermediate
*Maryville Elementary - Granite City

*Oak Hill School

*Silver Creek Elementary

Thank you again for all of your hard work in planning and executing your community service projects. The St. Louis metro area is a better place because of your efforts!

Girls on the Run St. Louis Staff
