Alum on the Run
On a warm sunny day in December, several former Girls on the Run St. Louis participants and their families went caroling at The Boulevard in Richmond Heights to raise funds for the St. Louis Christmas Carols Association.

The association makes grants to a variety of nonprofits in the area. The warm temperatures did not stop carolers from belting out familiar tunes such as "White Christmas" and "Let it Snow". They followed up their efforts with hot chocolate at Cafe Nadoz.

Caroling

The girls who participated in caroling are members of Alum on the Run, a new program for past participants in the Girls on the Run program.  Any girl who has taken part in Girls on the Run for at least one season is eligible to join Alum on the Run.

Empower a girl. Change the world.

Since 2002, Girls on the Run St. Louis has changed the lives of over 10,000 girls in our community . In these times of economic uncertainty, with childhood obesity rates at an all time high, St. Louis area girls need your help now more than ever. Girls on the Run:
  • Increases self-esteem and body-size satisfaction among pre-teen girls.
  • Encourages healthy habits and an active lifestyle.
  • Provides a non-competitive environment for physical activity.
  • Seeks to reduce adolescent pregnancies and eating disorders.
  • Encourages healthy eating habits, goal-setting and community building.
  • Gives girls a place to meet with friends while making healthy choices.
Girls on the Run is a dynamic after school program that uses the power of running to prepare girls for a lifetime of self-respect and healthy living.  During the 10-week program, girls are empowered with a greater sense of self-awareness, a foundation in team building and a sense of achievement.  We inspire girls to be joyful, healthy and confident using a fun, experience-based curriculum which creatively integrates running.

Please consider an end-of-year gift to help Girls on the Run St. Louis prepare girls for a lifetime of self-respect and healthy living.  All proceeds stay in the Greater St. Louis area.

$20: purchases healthy snacks for two girls for one season
$40: purchases a pair of running shoes for one girl
$85: purchases uniforms for a team of 17 girls for a season
$217: adopts one runner for a season

 Parent Survey Results

Girls on the Run St. Louis conducted a parent survey this summer with the help of our intern and Washington University student, Dana Perantie. A total of 693 parents/guardians took the 2011 GOTR-STL Parent Survey. We wanted to share some of the results of the survey with the GOTR-STL community.

118 schools were represented by the survey - 94 in Missouri and 24 in Illinois.

Top reasons for joining GOTR were:

  1. Fun! (81%)
  2. Exercise (78%)
  3. Friends (73%)
  4. Challenge (67)
  5. Self-Esteem (66%)

Most respondents indicated the girl intended to participate again (59%).

Ratings of overall satisfaction with the program were high: averaging 91 on a scale of 0 to 100.

Ratings of overall satisfaction with coaches were also high: averaging 93 on a scale of 0 to 100.

What do parents value most about the program?

  1. Effects on self-esteem (confidence, self-worth, believing in themselves)
  2. Effects on physical fitness
  3. The Coaches
  4. Goal-setting (achievement, accomplishment, challenge, perseverance, able to do something she didn't think was possible!)
  5. Teamwork (unity, camaraderie, togetherness, cooperation)

Though these were the most commonly listed favorite aspects of the program, there was a wonderful variety of responses.

We are taking your feedback into account, and this information will also help inform the development of future youth development programs. Please continue to share your comments and input about the program with us!
