Moonlight Magic 2012

 

Join us for the Massey Alliance's 10th annual Moonlight Magic, held Saturday, June 9, 6:30 - 10:30 p.m. at the James River Cellars Winery.

 

It will be a fun evening with music by the Fuzz Band, wine- and beer-tastings, and silent and live auctions, all in support of Massey's mission to save lives through innovative research and compassionate care.

Being sun-smart reduces your risk of skin cancer

As summer approaches, take caution. Just using a good sunscreen may not be enough to protect yourself from harmful ultraviolet rays, says Massey skin cancer expert Algin Garrett, M.D., chair of the Department of Dermatology at VCU Medical Center. "Sunburn damage is a direct cause of skin cancer." Skin cancer is the most prevalent and one of the most preventable forms of cancer in the U.S. How can you reduce your risk?

Novel leukemia treatment shows potential

Stephen Grant, M.D.Scientists at Massey may be one step closer to developing a new therapy for acute myeloid leukemia (AML) after discovering that the targeted agents obatoclax and sorafenib kill leukemia cells much more effectively when combined than when the drugs are administered individually. Cancer survivor shares his clinical trial experience

In cancer research, clinical trials enable doctors and scientists to determine whether new discoveries are more effective treatments than the current best standards. New life-saving therapies are available today because of people who have participated in clinical trials in the past.

State cancer legislation is signed at Massey
At a recent celebration at Massey, Virginia Governor Bob MGov. McDonnell signing billscDonnell ceremonially signed four different bills that will further cancer-related research, treatment and education throughout the state. State support for Massey increased from $1 million to $7.5 million in the past two years, and with House Bill 1182 - one of the measures signed - the center will be able to apply for additional funding from the Tobacco Indemnification and Community Revitalization Fund.

"While we can celebrate that more and more Virginians are surviving cancer today because of the work of cancer organizations like Massey, we must continue to work to find a cure. With the Commonwealth's support, that important work will continue and expand," McDonnell said. Read more | View video

Local Be The One Run raises awareness of the national marrow registry

Richmond-area Massey cancer survivor Ashley Schermerhorn was reunited with her unrelated bone marrow donor from Michigan at the recent, local Be The One Run.


The event underscored the need to build the national registry to help patients with leukemia, lymphoma and other illnesses obtain a bone marrow transplant when there are no marrow donors in their family who match. Learn more about Massey's Bone Marrow Transplant program: View video
