Being sun-smart reduces your risk of skin cancer |
As summer approaches, take caution. Just using a good sunscreen may not be enough to protect yourself from harmful ultraviolet rays, says Massey skin cancer expert Algin Garrett, M.D., chair of the Department of Dermatology at VCU Medical Center. State cancer legislation is signed at Massey |
At a recent celebration at Massey, Virginia Governor Bob M cDonnell ceremonially signed four different bills that will further cancer-related research, treatment and education throughout the state. State support for Massey increased from $1 million to $7.5 million in the past two years, and with House Bill 1182 - one of the measures signed - the center will be able to apply for additional funding from the Tobacco Indemnification and Community Revitalization Fund. "While we can celebrate that more and more Virginians are surviving cancer today because of the work of cancer organizations like Massey, we must continue to work to find a cure. With the Commonwealth's support, that important work will continue and expand," McDonnell said. Read more | View video |
Local Be The One Run raises awareness of the national marrow registry |
Richmond-area Massey cancer survivor Ashley Schermerhorn was reunited with her unrelated bone marrow donor from Michigan at the recent, local Be The One Run.
The event underscored the need to build the national registry to help patients with leukemia, lymphoma and other illnesses obtain a bone marrow transplant when there are no marrow donors in their family who match. Learn more about Massey's Bone Marrow Transplant program: View video
