"Life is stronger than cancer."
Dustin "Dirty D" Wray is battling cancer for the third time. The treatment that saved him when he was 11 caused his current post-radiation sarcoma. "It's pretty rare, but it happens," his wife Amanda Wray explains.
In a show of love for her husband and support for others with cancer, Wray has formed the "Live Wrad 4 Dirty D!" team to participate in the HDL, Inc. Massey Challenge as part of the Ukrop's Monument Avenue 10k this Saturday, March 31. "I can do it for him because life is stronger than cancer," says Amanda. Read more.

New compound discovered that rapidly kills liver cancer
Scientists have identified a new compound that rapidly kills hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) cells, while sparing healthy tissue. HCC is the most common form of liver cancer and fifth most common cancer worldwide. The compound, Factor Qunolinone Inhibitor 1 (FQI1), works by blocking an oncogene (a gene that has the potential to cause cancer) originally discovered by a team of researchers led by Devanand Sarkar, M.B.B.S., Ph.D., Harrison Scholar at VCU Massey Cancer Center. "We may be on the verge of developing a new, effective drug for liver cancer," says Sarkar. Read more.

Free legal help for Massey patients |
When a person is diagnosed with cancer, other concerns in their life do not go away. Sometimes, issues become more challenging and affect a patient's ability to focus on health and healing. The Richmond Cancer Advocacy Team (RCAT) may be able to help you at no cost if you are a Massey patient and need help with job or housing-related issues; debt or bill collectors; child custody, abuse or child support issues; obtaining public benefits; making or updating a will or similar concerns.
RCAT is staffed by VCU Massey Cancer Center, LINC, the Legal Aid Justice Center and the Central Virginia Legal Aid Society. Referral to this resource is completely voluntary, confidential and free. Learn more.

Ask Massey: Why should I agree to have my tumor tissue banked? |
A "tissue bank" is literally the place where biological tissue (such as fragments of a cancer tumor) is preserved for future research if the donor gives consent. In an interview on WTVR CBS 6, David Williams, M.D., Ph.D., explains the importance of a tissue bank and the valuable contribution a patient makes to cancer research by agreeing to donate tissue samples. National Healthcare Decisions Day
Despite recent gains in public awareness of the need for advance medical care planning, studies indicate that most Americans have not exercised their right to make decisions about their health care in the event that they cannot speak for themselves. This is why April 16 has been designated National Healthcare Decisions Day to promote the importance of making your wishes known.
If you do not have an advance medical directive, check out these excellent tools and resources to help you create one.
